Homework: Helpful or Hurtful?

The world of children nowadays is basically accepted as one full of homework. Parents have grown accustom to the fight and most do it willingly because they know that making their child answer endless questions and fill out mountains of paperwork is what is best for them, but is it really? Think about it for a moment, the entire point of school now is for students to pass exams and make the school look bad (Enayati); no pressure, right? Wrong. Because schools are getting more and more pressure put on them for their students to do well, teachers are also being put through the ringer. These teachers control 7-8 hours of children’s lives each day and are expected to use that time to prepare students to the best of their ability to make the school proud on these government mandated tests. What more could they want? Oh right, all of each kids home life time as well. There is something very wrong with a government program that puts so much pressure on schools that they feel 8 hours is not enough time to train a child. Homework is a known cause of stress in children, burnout, obesity, and actually has very few weak ties to success in school. Saying that they are stressed out and have too much homework is a typical teenaged complaint, but studies have shown that it is true (Does homework really work?). Having young kids around in the evenings after school one is almost guaranteed to see a tantrum. The fits are not coming out of nowhere, children are being pushed to the limit and teachers may not even realize it. “Many teachers underestimate the homework they are giving by fifty percent, so an assignment that they think is 30 minutes is actually 45. Plus if you add any additional problems like ADD it could become an hour,” (Is Too Much H... ... middle of paper ... ... and want nothing more to do with school.
