I – Developing Accreditation Standards
Consider what you would require of a counseling program if you were an accreditation body charged with developing accreditation standards. Specifically, speak to each of the following and give some rationale for your answers.
a. Admission requirements (GPA, GRE/MAT scores, etc.)
I would require students to have upheld a 3.0 or above GPA in undergraduate school in order to be qualified for graduate school. After researching several universities, their requirements were a 2.75 GPA. Personally, I think this GPA is too low. East Carolina University requires students to score within the 30th percentile on the GRE or MAT. For myself, taking standardized tests are difficult and I believe scoring in the 30th percentile is a reasonable score.
b. Number of total hours for internship. Of these, how many would be direct service?
Internships hold a debating view in my opinion. Recalling my internship for teaching, I found it to be extremely stressful. Frequently, I saw where the education program was requiring students to do a set of assignments, but the school systems required their teachers to do something else. The internship did not prepare me for my current job as a teacher, rather I only completed hours of unnecessary work to receive an “A” in college classes.
I should not judge each field of study based on my past experiences, so I think some internship hours should be partially scattered throughout the college program and them one final semester. Roughly, students would be required to observe 100 hours in various settings with no more than 20 hours in one place. These hours can be completed over a few semesters with some assignments for each location. The final semester will then be ded...

A pre-practicum internship can be an extremely beneficial off campus endeavor that one can experience prior to the actual internship. The central rationale of pre-practicum is to add meaning to the educational undertakings of the student. Consequently, it facilitates tangible practices that embolden the association of theory and method. Pre-practicum affords an experiential gathering opportunity for students to relate ideas, information, and services gained in real situations to classroom discussion. It also allows students to assess the personal suitability of a prospective career choice and to develop an awareness of community services, economic underpinnings,

The ACA is the professional association for all types of counselors. The ACA has its own code of ethics, when you join the ACA you must sign a statement that you will abide by the ACA code of ethics. The ACA publishes the Journal of Counseling and Development, just as ASCA publishes Professional School Counseling as its journal. In 2012, eighty-four percent of Santa Clara University graduates who responded to a survey from the Santa Clara University School of Engineering obtained one or more internships during their undergraduate studies. Of those who responded, eighty-two percent were employed full-time after graduation earning a median salary of $62,500 (Santa Clara University). This research exhibits that internships can be an important strategy in the efforts toward job search for both students, as well as for employers looking to hire valuable employees.
