“In that brief moment of madness, I believe, my Figel period came to an end, and I began in earnest a long journey of putting together in my mind and heart a new understanding of what it means to be whole, to be alive, to be human, and to be able to love in a healthy and abiding way” (Schlegel 230). Schlegel studied the people of Teduray for almost two years, and in those two years he concluded he has two homes. The home with the people of Teduray and the home he is most familiar with back in America. The vast differences between his life back in America and his life in Figel no longer bothered him as compared to the past. It was not until he read the opening of Ruben, Ruben¸ by Pete de Vries when Schlegel felt completely dislocated from himself. He continuously questioned himself on where he was, who he was, who does he belong with, what is right, what is wrong, etc. He was neither in his own known world nor in the world of Teduray.
