Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Miriam-Webster dictionary defines education as the knowledge, skill, and understanding that you get from attending a school, college, or university. Does this definition imply that education can only be received from a society recognized institution? The answer is obviously no. In today’s society, education is dispensed and received through different forms: campus based, internet based, distance education, and home education. Home education or homeschool means a nonpublic school conducted primarily by the parent, guardian or other person having custody of a child. Anderson for a newspaper called the City Journal; the author explained that homeschooling was shown up for the first time on the national screen when a 13-year-old girl, Rebecca Sealfon, a homeschooled child , won the National Spelling Bee in 1997. She was applauded and her fame was made known to all America, which actually increased the interest of some parents on homeschooling. Homeschooling is best defined as parent-led, family-funded, relationship-based education of a child at home. The Arizona Family for Home Education (AFHE) defines homeschoolers as parents or legal guardians who choose to educate their own children at home in at least the required subjects of reading, grammar, math, science, and social studies. Homeschooled students are school-age children (ages 5–17) in a grade equivalent to at least kindergarten and not higher than 12th grade, who are taught at home instead of a public or private school. The Texas Supreme Court classifies homeschool as a private school and requires that the homeschooler uses a written curriculum which includes the minimum of the five basic subjects (reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics, and good citizenship), and operates in a bona-fide manner. …show more content…

Some critics of homeschooling claim that it will retard children’s socialization. Late Annette Cootes, former public relations coordinator of the Texas State Teachers Association, said, “Homeschooling is a form of child abuse because you are isolating children from human interaction. I think homeschoolers are doing a great discredit to their children.” In his research paper, “An A for Homes Schooling,” Brian elaborated that social research performed on homeschooled children suggests that they are not lacking in social skills. Larry Shyers, a postgraduate student of the University of Florida, filmed at play time 70 homeschooled children between eight and ten years, and the same number of children with the same age group who attended school. The counselors who watched the video without knowing which group the children belonged to, only found one difference in behavior: the homeschooled children had fewer behavioral and socialization
