Homeschooling as a Benefit
The question of whether homeschooling is a good option has been thrown around for many years but peaked a strong interest in parents during 1980’s and 90’s. Traditional schooling has proven to be beneficial in some areas in the past but times have changed and new techniques and advances have emerged. The newer emerged idea of homeschooling is one of the newer techniques that has proven itself to be very propitious. Traditional schooling’s credibility and effectiveness have lowered since homeschooling has emerged. Homeschooling is superior to traditional schooling because of a more productive work environment, positive socialization opportunities, and exceptional academic achievement.

Social pressure is decreased in a homeschooling atmosphere than in traditional schooling. Compared to traditional schools, homeschooling does not define students as much by numbers, such as grade point average, ACT/SAT scores, class ranking, test scores, etc. According to Nancy Brown, Ph.D., the nervous breakdowns, panic attacks, burnouts, and depression are also apparent in many younger students (Kaur 2). It is proven that students who are not so overwhelmed from pressure about grades and defining numbers will be less likely to have such nervous breakdowns. Homeschooled kids have enhanced confidence due to lack of stress from grades (Romanski 81). Homeschooling offers flexibility and can be a stress reliever for many. Home school gives children the opportunity to learn when they learn best, whether that be in the morning or in the afternoon. Some children prefer to work alone others with their peers. The parents will determine what their child’s learning style is. If the child need more or less time on a subject then they will have the chance to go over the subject as many time it is necessary for the student to learn it, or in the other hand if they completely comprehend the subject they can make a decision to skip it. A flexible schedule gives these options and many more to students compared to public or private schooling.
Homeschooling is becoming a huge trend across America. It does have its downsides to it, just like any other education. Many parents have to worry about the right way of letting their child have socialization. Without proper socialization, a child can lack proper social skills. Many parents fear the temptations public school can provide, so they homeschool their children to bring them up with holy and moral attitudes. No parent wants their child to hang around other children who abuse drugs, alcohol, or can misguide their children down a wrong path. With homeschooling, parents can monitor whom their children socialize with and for how long. Fearing to not have any socialization at all is where parents can go wrong.
In traditional school setting, it is said that children as young as grade school are being exposed to drugs, alcohol, bullying, and overly-sexualized nature (Chapman). In one day of a public school environment, there are many mischievous actions that go unseen due to the gaping student-teacher ratio. Children who are home educated have the chance to remain children for longer than most public schooled children because they avoid many of these negative influences. While homeschooling may not be solution that will completely eliminate all exposure to poor decisions, it will definitely reduce the possibility of them having to decide between saying yes or no to something illegal. Authority figures have more time to inform students of the dangers and consequences of being exposed to such activities when a student is homeschooled. The absurd amount of peer pressure that can be put on a student in traditional schooling is often why they make such decisions. Studies have shown that homeschooling makes it easier for children to avoid mimicking behaviors and character choices demonstrated by others around them like public school children do. The conclusion to the study explained that homeschooled students were more likely to develop greater social skills, be able to function well in an adult environment, and be able to take on negative peer pressures while still making responsible decisions. With that being said, if a college freshman who was previously public schooled was asked to go to a party with a group of friends but had a test he needed to study for the next day, then there is a greater possibility of him saying yes than there is for a student who was homeschooled for most his life. That’s 3.4 percent of all school age children (304). Homeschooling is often portrayed as an overprotective mom - unwilling to let her kids leave her for a day at school, and a large number of children, all unable to hold a conversation, let alone function normally in society. As someone who was homeschooled from kindergarten through eighth grade, I can attest that my homeschool experience was the exact opposite of this confining stereotype.
Homeschooling offers students a more time efficient education that allows the student to focus on education in which is the sole purpose for school. Homeschooling also gives the teacher a thorough evaluation of a student’s strengths and weaknesses by visually seeing what subjects they excel in and what subjects they are weak in. At this point students can increase their individual progression in each subject. Homeschooling permits control of the environment a student learns in to retain the focus of the student. This will reduce the chances of drug usage, bullying, and violence. Samuel Blumenfeld said this on the importance of homeschooling “The home is a safe haven for the children in a world awash with drugs, sexually transmitted diseases, violence, and moral corruption” (Cindy Mur et al.76). When parents come to realize that the home is the safest place for their children, then will they act as Blumenfeld concludes “I look forward to the day when the public schools will be virtually empty not because we have abolished public education but because the parents will have abandoned it” (Cindy Mur et al.
Education is an amazing opportunity, no matter how one receives it. Since the beginning of the public-school system, homeschooling had become a dwindling sight, until the last 20 years or so. The stigma surrounding homeschooling is one that paints parents as intolerant and children as awkward and anti-social. Many are skeptic about homeschooling and want their children to experience life outside of the home through public or private school. While this is completely understandable, could homeschooling offer a better education and more future success than public schooling? Homeschooling produces better test scores and is more academically effective than public schooling.
It is essential to understand that is no one size fits all. Cheryl Seelhoff (2000) suggests, "homeschooling is going to be different for every family, for every parents, for every child. There are no one size fits all formulas or solutions; families must always work out their own solutions in the context of their own unique lives" (p.2). The basic theme is the fact that homeschooling is the education of children under the direct influence and oversight of parents (Lines, 1998). Some notable characteristics of homeschooling includes parents are actively involved their children education; in most cases, the mother plays the dominant role. Homeschooling creates the favorable styles that suits the parents and the children. Children learn things that they are interested in and when they are ready to learn. Homeschooling creates the opportunity for the parents and children to spend more time together, praying, and learning. Most of these characteristics are hard to attain when family members spend their day going separate directions. Homeschooling creates the opportunity for families to go for vacations together, gaming together, attend religious services together, and so on. This encourages the upholding of moral values. Studies have shown year after year that homeschooled students consistently perform just as well as (or in many cases better than) traditionally schooled students on standardized academic exams. But very rarely does anyone ask why this is, or what caused the student to do so well, because they are usually too concerned with questions about the student’s social life or if they would be able to handle the transition into college. Therefore, my thesis statement is: Homeschooled students often achieve higher academic success and are more active in their communities than traditionally schooled students, due to a personalized approach to learning that emphasizes individuality. My research paper will debunk some popular myths about homeschooling, and give the real reasons why homeschoolers are so successful.
Today, many parents are homeschooling their children. A U.S. Department of Education’s report shows that approximately 1.5 million children were being homeschooled in 2007 (Lips & Feinberg, 2008). This is almost 3 percent of all school age children (Lips & Feinberg, 2008). A private researcher, the National Home Education Research Institute, estimates 2.5 million children were being homeschooled in the 2007 – 2008 academic years (Lips & Feinberg, 2008). By either count, homeschooling is growing exponentially.
Homeschooled children’s personal education doesn’t get overlooked. According to “homeschooling vs. public schooling: making the right choice” in the Huffington Post, Marion Lewis states, that public schools focus on teaching the average student; which means any student above or below average doesn’t get what he/she needs. With so many students it’s no wonder many students are getting overlooked. Marion states that class sizes are too big, with class ratios being anywhere from one teacher with twenty students to a whopping thirty students to one teacher. Homeschooling helps fix this problem by having individualized education for each student. With homeschooling, the parent has the opportunity to pick out of the many curriculum options the right one to teach their child the way best suited for them. Marion also mentions how one on one teaching helps the parent (in this case the teacher) find and target the students weaknesses to help focus on fixing those weaknesses.
In today’s American society, quality education is important for one to succeed. Without proper education, a person will find it extremely difficult to apply for college, a job, or to pursue his or her dream. Typically when Americans think of education, public education is the first to come to mind. Public education has been around for centuries and is provided to most children throughout the United States. Due to this fact, public education has been the go to education source for years. Though, this trend is slowly changing with many parents deciding to home school their children instead. Many factors are the cause for this issue, but the common arguments arise from a certain few. For students, public school provides many opportunities ranging from social connections, school sports, and the exposure to teachers who are experts in their fields. But homeschooling is often superior because it offers additional time for students to participate in various extracurricular activities and community service, allows for more individual attention, personal character development, and it offers less exposure to discrimination that is received in the public school environment.
ABSTRACT: Homeschooling is a controversial topic among educators. The issues that follow a child throughout their educational and social lives, are elevated when a child has been home schooled. There is no social environment for the child to learn to develop basic social skills; most home schooling environments are made up of a child, perhaps accompanied by a sibling, and the parent teaching the information given. There is no room for a developed personality that is consistent with a child of equal age and grade in a normal schooling environment.
As the population in public schools increase, the problems in these schools are also on the rise. These changes are leasing to the way parents are schooling their children. Many parents are leaning towards homeschooling as a solution to this problem. This increase in homeschooling can be directly related to an increase in school violence, the offering of a lack luster curriculum, and lack of student teacher interaction.
Perhaps the most significant impact of home schooling is the actual learning. There are many academic advantages. In a home schooling situation, there is no doubt a more individualized program of study than any traditional school can offer. Whatever a child's pace or level of ability is, it can be met directly. A parent or tutor can focus exactly on what the child needs extra help or improvement in, as well as what the child excels at.(Ray, 2014) In a public school, teachers must teach to "the middle" and have little time to cater to an individual student's needs on a regular basis.
