Winston Churchill once said, “Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential.” Effort and pure determination is a key part of the success of the rocket boys throughout Homer Hickam’s October Sky. Due to the effort and determination that Sonny had to use in order to pursue his dreams throughout the memoir of October Sky, the theme in this book can be used to help any 21st century student in achieving their dreams.

If Sonny did not put towards the effort or have the determination to want to build his rockets, his dreams would not have come true. When the rocket boys first started building rockets, a lot of the town was against them, they were bullied, and Sonny’s own dad was even against him. ...ctober Sky, but the one that stands out the most is in the theme of the novel. The rocket boys would not have made it if they did not have one key quality- determination. The rocket boys, especially Sonny, had countless setbacks that prevented them from building their rockets. They also had to actually learn how to build rockets. To learn how to build rockets from scratch takes a lot of effort, and time, which is what the rocket boys put into their rockets. This teaches a very important life lesson as well; if you put enough effort, time, work into something and if you are determined enough, you can achieve anything, which is the attitude needed in the 21st century at this moment. In conclusion, October Sky teaches a great lesson through the brilliant theme of the book, which can be used even with anyone, especially with high school students in the 21st century.
