“In the 2011-2012 school year, 1,166,339 homeless children and youth were enrolled in public schools.”(empathyeducates) Homelessness has been a major issue that has been progressing in the United States. “As many as 3.5 million Americans are homeless each year. Of these, more than 1 million are children and on any given night, more than 300,000 children are homeless.” (Blue Tangerine Solutions). Everyone should have the opportunity of having an education. We can create a more fair and equal society by providing homeless children and youths with the opportunity of having an education.
Why do youths become homeless? Many youths run away from home and leave most of their personal belongings behind. These runaways are considered to be unaccompanied, meaning that they are individuals without adult supervision. “The National Runaway Switchboard estimates that on any given night there is approximately 1.3 million homeless youth living unsupervised on the streets, in abandoned buildings, with friends or with strangers.” (Homeless and Runaway Youth).
