1. Home and family life can impact work negatively or positively. The textbook “Women & Men in Management” describes it as allies and enemies. As enemies it essentially means that the roles of the person at homes conflicts with the roles at work. This is according to a “conflict perspective of the work-facility interface”. People attempt to juggle the two and sometimes there is conflict due to the pressures of both. Sometimes the demands of work impede on home duties and oftentimes problems or obligations can carry over to work from home, for some people. It is critical for any leader to be aware and knowledgeable of the budget of their organization in order to survive. The textbook “Effectively Managing and Leading Human Service Organization” addresses managing agency finances, and seeking funding which both fall under Enhancing Agency Survivability. When a leader understands the budget, he/she is able to plan for income and expenses that are needed to employ personnel and effectively run an organization. It’s important for a leader to be able to make informed decisions about where funds should be utilized to provide the best services for their clients. A leader needs to understand the assets and liabilities of the organization to know the organization’s worth. Being abreast of the budget also allows for you to catch discrepancies in advance so that corrections can be made. When things are discovered too late it can be crucial to the organization. With being informed, a leader will be able to take action immediately to ameliorate any financial problems and revise budgets if necessary. In Human Services, job structure and organization is more important than an individual’s personal characteristics because job structure can affect the quality of work just as much as the personality of one individual. Structure takes on the consideration of task needed to be completed within the organization and the staff that’s able to fulfil those task. Jobs are organized by peoples specializations not personality characteristics. The book, “Effectively Managing and Leading Human Service Organizations” states that sometimes structure is comprised of staff’s strengths and weaknesses. The book uses the example of a manager who has strong interpersonal skills but may be weak at handling administrative details. In my opinion and experience, a person may not have the greatest personality however they could be phenomenal with a skill or in a particular position. If this is something that the person takes pride in, than most likely the undesirable personality trait may not surface as much because the employee is happy in doing the job that they were assigned to do. In my experience, when people are happy in their position, they are more likely to be more productive. In another example, an employee may not be very outgoing at work or may be quiet however they could be diligent about their work and work better alone.
