Tony Kushner’s A Bright Room Called Day is set in Germany in the years 1932

and 1933 in the apartment of the main character, Agnes Eggling. Agnes Eggling and

her friends are all advocates of the communist party during Hitler’s fascist rise to

power. Agnes and her friends are having and struggling to deal with the fact that

the Weimar Republic is falling and flirt with the idea of standing up to Hitler and the

fascist party.

Agnes is the main character and protagonist in Kushner’s A Bright Room

Called Day and I believe the actress playing Agnes Eggling did rather well in her

portrayal of the character. The idea behind Agnes is that she is a middle-class

actress in Germany who lives with lover, a one eyed Hungarian Trotskyist named

Vealtninc Husz. Agnes is well liked, but when it comes time for her to take a stand

or risk anything she values to fight for her cause she, like many Germans in this time

period, just became a bystander of Hitler’s acts. She did nothing because of her fear

of losing the apartment that she loved.
