ANNAVARAM TEMPLE
LOCATION
Annavaram Temple is situated in Annavaram, a village situated on the banks of the Pampa River in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. The main feature of Annavaram is the shrine of Lord Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy situated on the Ratnagiri hills. This temple stands second only to Tirupati in terms of holy visitors in Andhra Pradesh.
HISTORY OF THE TEMPLE
A tale goes behind the origin of the hill and how the Lord came to exist in that place. Meruvu, the Lord of the hills, with his consort Menaka did a great penance and as a result, were gifted two sons by the grace of Lord Vishnu. One was named Bhadra and the other Ratnakara. Bhadra pleased Lord Vishnu with his great devotion and was blessed to become a hill known as Bhadragiri on which Lord Vishnu resided permanently in form of Lord Rama. This place is now well known as Bhadrachalam. To emulate his brother, Ratnakara also started praying Lord Vishnu. Pleased with his penance, Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Sri Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy and blessed him to turn into hill known as Ratnagiri. Since then the Lord resides on the hill of Ratnagiri, named after Ratnakara.
There is also a myth related to the place as how the idol was discovered. It is said that the Lord Vishnu himself came into the dreams of a villager named Earanki Prakasam and told him that his Vigraha (idol) was lying on the Ratnagiri hill, under a tree, unattended and abandoned. He told him to trace it and sanctify it again. That villager informed this very fact to Sri Raja I.V.Ramanarayanam, the then landlord of Gorsa and Kirlampudi estates. TRANSPORTATION
BY AIR
Rajahmundry Airport is the nearest one, which is 80 km away from the temple and is well connected to Hyderabad. Visakhapatnam Airport (115 km) is the other airport which is stuated close to Annavaram and is connected to major cities of India and abroad.
BY TRAIN
Annavaram has its own railway station. It falls on the Chennai-Howrah route. Most of the express trains halt here. It is just 3 km away from the temple.
BY ROAD
APSRTC and private travels operate regular bus services to Annavaram from major cities of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Devasthanam at Annavaram is also running buses from Downhill to Uphill. The best way to reach temple is by your own means of transport like car or private taxis.

The Greek deity that I choose for the assignment is Poseidon, the main factor that I choose him is based on the geographical environment. California is located in the seismic zone, and bay area is surrounded by the sea. According to the Greek myth, “Poseidon is the god of sea, earthquake” (Theoi Greek Mythology 1). The end of the Geometric period resulted in the beginning of the Orientalizing Period, dated between 700-600 BC. Within this time frame, Greek introduced a new innovation, the Peripteral Temple. For many years prior, a row of colonnade was used on the interior primarily to hold up the roof of the building. In contrast, columns are seen being used on the outside, creating a visual wall around the building exposing parts of the interior. With in the temple existed the megaron style, carried forward from Bronze Age homes. It was also in eastern influenced period, the first real stone temples, and terra cotta roof tiles came to exist to hold the weight on these new stone temples. The population grew drastically, introducing new techniques and styles, which blended to form designs with balance and symmetry. It was during this period, two major Greek designs were developed, the Ionic and Doric order. (Pedley, 2012: pg. 180) The Doric order, being the first and most simple, consisted of baseless columns placed closely together as the Greeks did not know how much weight the shortened columns could hold. Reason behind this was the lack of length in the columns were believed to hold less weight and therefore forced into being placed closer together. This closely set arrangement created a very bold statement in the Doric temple. The Capital, which sat on top of the concaved shaped shaft, was left plain but when grouped alongside others, suggested a bold harmony.
