Advantages and disadvantages of open and closed adoption
Don’t take our word for it - see why 10 million students trust us with their essay needs.
In today’s society, over 143 million of children worldwide are growing up without parents (The United Nations Children’s Fund, 2006). This is largely due to homelessness, wars, natural disasters, and disease which produce many unadopted children (Bartholet & Smolin, 2012). Unparented children find themselves at a high-level danger of perception, deficient care, mistreatment and exploitation, and their welfare is regularly inadequately monitored. Many Children without parental care are placed in terrible institutions, where they receive less personal attention and insufficient care environments can diminish children’s feeling and societal advancement and leave them defenceless to exploitation, sexual mistreatment and corporal savagery (The United Nations Children’s Fund [UNICEF], 2006). It illustrates the inequality of children’s rights in society. Adoption supports children’s needs by providing parents and provides a better environment for them than an orphanage or foster home. Adoption is an exceptional method to overrule inequality in current society by preserving the human rights and responding to the aspirations of people without children.
To provide the historical background of adoption, in ancient times and human cultures, children have been moved from guardians who could not be parents to guardians who wanted them for affection (“Adoption History:Timeline of Adoption History,” n.d.). Adoption is a legitimate procedure that permanently gives parental entitlement to adoptive parents. The legal connection leads adoptee to become the licit inheritor of adoptive person and terminates any law existence with the original guardians. There are two types of adoptions - open adoption and closed adoption. An open adoption allows the or...

... money (Clark, 2013). It points out that adoptive children have more value in real society than assumed materials. Furthermore, Care, love and time of adoptive families can treat developmental setbacks of children. Care, love and time are very necessary for new adoptive children because they come from a different culture, tradition and living circumstance.
In the final analysis, adoption is an excellent method to solve the current problems and both adoptees and adoptive parents can get the benefits each other. Not only assist the children without parental care to become parented children and solve the inequality of children rights simultaneously including adoption respond the aspiration of people without children. If people do not realise to the ethical assistance each other, our society will full of poor unparented children and stress of inequality in our society.
When a couple or individual decides to adopt a child, they know they are going to take on the responsibility of taking care of someone else’s child. Due to the biological parent(s) who can’t take care of that child anymore, because of either drug abuse, alcohol abuse, abuse to the child or if the parent(s) had died and there is no other care for the child. So that’s why this gives other couples who cannot have kids, the opportunity to promise themselves to be a great parent to a child in need. Though there are some bad things about adoption as well. Like adopting a child from another country of another race, because once that child is adopted into an American family, he or she will be cut off from their culture and never know about their history. Everyone should to know about their culture and history.
What is adoption? “Adoption establishes a legally recognized, lifelong relationship between a parent and child. The adoptive parent becomes legally and morally responsible for the child's safety, education, health care, value development, development of life skills, as well as the day-to-day care of that child.(Society, 2014)” Adoption is not only maintaining a child, but it is maintaining the responsibility to love and take care of a human being.
Adoption is in place to balance, to nurture and create a structural environment of safety in which the child can thrive and develop into a productive individual contributing to society. Also, it allows older children to abandon old maladaptive behaviors and make their first steps toward the construction of new behaviors influenced by their new environment. In years past, parents who adopted a child as an infant often debated whether to tell him or her about the adoption. Many children grew up not knowing they were adopted, and the birth mother’s identity was kept secret from those who did know (Ashford, LeCroy and Lortie 249). This paper provides facts on widely acceptance option of open adoption rather than the traditional practice of closed adoption. Adoption separates real biological family members, removing the adopter heritage whether the adoption is open or closed. Open adoption can lead to problems, but there are proven facts that open adoption is the best option for all parties working together in the best interest of the children.
Sealed records for adoptees should be illegal due to the emotional, medical and the history of an adoptee. How is sealing a person’s life away upon any kinds of adoptions and never allowing them to know who they are, where they came from, and their medical background be close to right? How can being for sealed records ever help the ones who really need the support?
During the 1960s many people who could not have children turned to adoption. Some women were persuaded to give up their children even though they were capable of take care of the child. The social, economic and religious pressures help women make the decision for them. Sometimes they were pressured to give up their child because they were not married and adoption was better than abortion.
The National Adoption Center reports that fifty-two percent of adoptable children have attachment disorder symptoms. It was also found that the older the child when adopted, the higher the risk of social maladjustment (Benson et al., 1998). This is to say that a child who is adopted at one-week of age will have a better chance of “normal'; adjustment than a child who is adopted at the age of ten. This may be due in part to the probability that an infant will learn how to trust, where as a ten-year-old may have more difficulty with this task, depending on his history. Eric Erickson, a developmental theorist, discusses trust issues in his theory of development. The first of Erickson’s stages of development is Trust v. Mistrust. A child who experiences neglect or abuse can have this stage of development severely damaged. An adopted infant may have the opportunity to fully learn trust, where as an older child may have been shuffled from foster home to group home as an infant, thereby never learning trust. Even though Trust v. Mistrust is a major stage of development, “the greatest psychological risk for adopted children occurs during the middle childhood and adolescent years'; (McRoy et al., 1990). As children grow and change into adolescents, they begin to search for an identity by finding anchoring points with which to relate. Unfortunately, adopted children do not have a biological example to which to turn (Horner & Rosenberg, 1991), unless they had an open adoption in which they were able to form a relationship with their biological families as well as their adoptive ones. Also key to the development of trust is the ab...
Adoption is as old as time itself, even if it wasn?t formally called that. It has been spoken about in old Greek texts, and in the bible itself. However, not until the 1850?s was adoption legally sanctioned. At this point, adoption was usually a matter of financial circumstances. Children were given to farmers to help tend the land during Industrialization, because some families were unable to financially care for the children in their new lives in the city. As the need for adoption laws increased, Massachusetts instituted the first formal statute. These statutes however, did little to protect the child. Finally, in 1917, Minnesota required the state agency of child welfare to investigate these cases and make recommendations to the court.
According to American academy and adolescent psychiatry, about 120,000 children are adopted in the United States alone. That is a lot of children that need to find a new home to stay in. Not only do adoptions affect the child after they are adopted, no matter the age; but adoption also affects the parents giving their child up for adoption. There are many types of adoptions. Along with that, there are many reasons for giving the child up for adoption. There are three main perspectives that I will be talking about. One function would be the structural functionalism. How society cooperates. The second would be the conflict perspective. The third would be symbolic interactionism approach. There are many different aspects of adoption, making it
Many countries experience different forms, and different people experience it in different ways. For example, a phrase referred to as “birth mother trafficking,” by Taylor Brown of University or North Carolina and Jini Roby of Birmingham Young University, happens very frequently (71). Chad Turner shares an account of birth mother trafficking in Samoa, where mothers were approached in a market place and were convinced to give away their children to the American adoption agency, Focus on Children (97). Along with the other forms of emotional tacticss used by adoption agencies to get children, they scare their victims into abiding by their wishes. This is why children hesitate to tell their adoptive parents what actually happened to them, or biological parents are reluctant to fight for their children back. The fear tactics used are damaging to all parties involved. Anti-adoption groups exist in many of these countries, and were once viewed as the “bad guys” by those trying to adopt. Looking further into their views, they oppose the evil practices and trafficking involved in intercountry adoption. Adoption agencies are a huge market in third world countries, and they have tremendous power and
It tends to be a crucial and a challenging process for adoptive parents to converse with their child that he or she is adopted at an early age because of every human being deserves to know their origins and any background information you can possibly provide, the later you wait the more you can hurt the child, and lastly to maintain that bond of trust so the child doesn't feel like a burden to the family. As of November 2013 In the United States of America it is shown 397,122 children are living without permanent families and are registered in the foster care system . And out of these children there are 101,666 children in the system who are eligible for adoption. However thirty-two percent of these children will have to wait over three years
Many people grow up in loving families and cannot imagine not having their parents and siblings around, but each year, 18,000 or more American born babies are put up for adoption (Newlin Carney). That means at least 18,000 children face the harsh truth of maybe not having a family to grow up in. Childhood is a very important part of one’s life and helps shape who one is. These children that are eligible to be adopted just need loving parents, good homes, and stability. And who is to say the high price of adopting is not ho...
A child with little hope is finally given a better future by getting an extraordinary opportunity, just by getting adopted by a caring, loving family, even across the borders. Foreign adoption is one of the possible ways to open this door to a wonderful life full of opportunities. These hapless children can go from an unsteady environment to a stable one. Alas, there is more to such a miracle then there may seem with all the complications and challenges that come wrapped up with it. Though with all the trouble most people say it’s worth it.
The best things in life come free to us. Our parents are one of the most important and fundamental in our life. However, people generally wonder, do adopted children feel the same way we do? Adoption is not easy, it's full of risks, simply because no one is aware of the future, the person adopting a child will never know how the child will react once he's aware he's adopted. Will they grow to love them, hate them, admire them or fear them? All of these unanswerable questions makes any person think twice before having the courage to adopt. Adoption never fails to put down any parents' feelings, whether they were homeless, abandoned, poor or runaway children and also families who don't have the option of being biological parents, the pleasure it gives to all of those people exceeds all of it's expected problems. However; adoption has some positive sides. It's one of life's fair treaties. It gives hope and integrity to the families who weren't fortunate to conceive; moreover, it changes the life of the child forever mostly positively. That's why many people support adoption worldwide.
What is adoption? Adoption is a legal process by which permanent legal custody is transferred from the birth parent to other parents. In this case Adoption is the process of making a child your own. Adoption is usually a process from non-biological parents. There are far more people wanting to adopt babies than there are babies to be adopted, only about twenty thousand babies a year are put up to be adopted, if an adoption agency places your baby up for an adoption only the best fit family can choose to adopt your child. All adoptions involve some form of consent – an agreement by the birth parent that the child should be adopted. If there are no living birth parents or the child was abandoned, then the consent must be given by the state or country where the child is a resident. Kinship adoptions occur when the birth parents are unstable to care for a child and some member of the child’s family seeks to adopt him or her.
Child marriage is a global issue, transpiring in all parts of the world. Abducted from their home and family, young girls - below eighteen - are married off against their own will not only affecting the girls (mentally and physically) but the country as a whole. The organization, Too Young to Wed, says “… marrying them off at such a young age, they are putting the girls at risk and perpetuation the cycle of powerlessness and poverty.” Child marriages occurred throughout history and still an affair today due to society’s tolerance. And the number of young girls forced to wed increased and will continue to increase if society remains tolerant to this sensitive matter.
