Augmented reality differs from virtual reality because it turns an existing environment into a 3D digital interface when a camera on a smartphone or tablet hovers over a still image and the user has the ability to interact with it.
Whereas with virtual reality, digital worlds are imagined through a mounted headset from a computer-generated simulation of a real-life environment or situation.

Virtual reality is not new. It was first invented by a cinematographer, Morton Heilig in 1957.
He patented the first 3D video machine called the Sensorama in 1962.

There are approximately 8,000 apps in the iOS App Store and 9,000 apps in the Google Play Store generating over $1.5 billion in revenue of downloads per year. It is clear how far the development of augmented reality has grown creating an immersive and engaging world around us through live digital images to engage consumers on another level to be part of an experience of how we will work, live, and play. According to Oxford dictionaries, “Augmented Reality” is a technology that provides the user with a computer-produced image of the real world (“Augmented Reality”). A source states that augmented reality in programming language is the process of combining images and videos from the real world with computer generated data. The development of the new computers has made it possible to engage data with augmented reality. The practical uses of augmented reality started with military instruments such as real time video displays that were being used in airplanes and tanks to detect targets accurately. Augmented reality was also used in video games to increase the realism of the game.
Although still in its, infancy, virtual reality will have a substantial effect on our future way of life. Virtual reality already has made astounding progress in the world of commercial design, and it is predicted to have a tremendous impact on everyday life as well.
