The Wright Innovation The Wright brothers are said to be America’s greatest innovators of all times. I believe this to be true. The Wright brothers consisted of Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright. They were two brothers from Ohio with a passion for aviation. This passion led the brothers to contribute to the fastest mode of transportation to date. Surprisingly enough both brothers did not graduate high school. Both brothers started their own printing business in 1889. Around this timeframes bicycles were becoming very popular. To capitalize on the market needs, both brothers opened up a bicycle sales and repair shop. Both brothers had a very strong interest in flight. They depending on their bicycle shop to fund their experiments with flight. After years of experiments the brothers were credited with inventing an engine powered aircraft with controls that made controlled flight possible. There are also usually said to have the first flight. This is not true, there were other experiments being conducted by other inventors, but the brothers were noticed because of the length of their flights. Lindbergh’s passion for mechanics didn’t come as a surprise to many. As a young boy, Charles seemed to be very interested in the family’s motorized vehicles, such as the Saxon Six automobile and Excelsior motorbike. But after starting college in the fall of 1920 as a mechanical engineer, his love for aviation started to bloom. Deciding that the field of aviation was more exciting, he dropped out within 2 years. He then decided to take lessons at the Nebraska Aircraft Corporation’s flying school and was up in the air for the first time on April 9, 1922 when he was in a two seat biplane as a passenger. But his solo flight would not be until May 1923 at the Souther Field in Americus, Georgia, an old flight training field where Lindbergh came to buy a World War I Curtiss JN-4 “Jenny” biplane. It only took half an hour to practice with another pilot at the field to decide that Lindbergh was ready to fly the plane himself. After a week of practicing, Lindbergh took off on his biplane on his first solo cross country flight and few weeks after that, achieving his first nighttime flight near Arkansas, both marking huge milestones for the young pilot.
The history of flying dates back as early as the fifteenth century. A Renaissance man named Leonardo da Vinci introduced a flying machine known as the ornithopter. Da Vinci proposed the idea of a machine that had bird like flying capabilities. Today no ornithopters exist due to the restrictions of humans, and that the ornithopters just aren’t practical. During the eighteenth century a philosopher named Sir George Cayley had practical ideas of modern aircraft. Cayley never really designed any workable aircraft, but had many incredible ideas such as lift, thrust, and rigid wings to provide for lift. In the late nineteenth century the progress of aircraft picks up. Several designers such as Henson and Langley, both paved the way for the early 1900’s aircraft design. Two of the most important people in history of flight were the Wright Brothers. Their efforts and risks helped shape the industry as well as the Jazz Age. Both Lindbergh and Amundsen are both famous for their daring feats that helped push the limits of their planes at the time and brought attention to the new industry. In the book The Invention Of Wings there were many themes written all over it. Though I found that the theme in this book is, everyone should be treated the same no matter the color of your skin. In Richland Center, Wisconsin on June 8, 1867, Frank Lloyd Wright was born to William Carey Wright and Anna Lloyd Jones. Most of his early childhood was spent traveling with his father from one ministry position to another in Rhode Island, Iowa, and Massachusetts but then in 1878, settled in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1885, Wright’s parents divorced, putting even more strain on their already difficult financial situation. In order to help support his family, an eighteen year old Wright worked for the dean of the University of Wisconsin’s department of engineering while also studying there. However, his passion was in architecture so in 1887, at the age of 20, he left Madison and headed to Chicago. In Chicago, he began working with two different firms, before he was hired by the partnership of Adler and Sullivan where he worked directly under Sullivan for six years.

While Wright has made an impact on Buffalo’s history and beautiful architecture, he has also made an impact all over the globe. From California to Tokyo, Frank Lloyd Wright and his designs are world renown. With several awards and different recognitions, he is arguably the greatest American architect of his time.

The trials and tribulations of flight have had their ups and downs over the course of history. From the many who failed to the few that conquered; the thought of flight has always astonished us all. The Wright brothers were the first to sustain flight and therefore are credited with the invention of the airplane. John Allen who wrote Aerodynamics: The Science of Air in Motion says, “The Wright Brothers were the supreme example of their time of men gifted with practical skill, theoretical knowledge and insight” (6). As we all know, the airplane has had thousands of designs since then, but for the most part the physics of flight has remained the same. As you can see, the failures that occurred while trying to fly only prove that flight is truly remarkable.
The Wright brothers grew up in West Dayton, Ohio, and ever since they were children they were destined for greatness. Wilbur Wright was born on April 16, 1867, in Millville, Indiana, and Orville was born four years later in Dayton, Ohio, on August 19 (Kelly 5). There are many inventions of the future that people either know or hope will happen and some inventions that people have never thought that would happen in this or the next lifetime. For instance, one piece of future technology that I believe may come to pass is the invention of flying cars. Since the time of being young and watching the Jetsons, many people have been waiting to see the first flying car. While bringing up the idea of a flying car to a lot of people would seem absurd or downright impossible to some, I actually believe that it is very much so possible to create given how far technology has come in the past few decades. I think that it is a very logical conclusion to assume that at some point in the future engineers, car makers, and others will start to pursue other alternatives to avoiding traffic jams and other problems on the road, and instead begin to examine the possibilities of taking to the air as an alternative solution. There is much talk about it over the internet and many people would like to try flying cars. While it would greatly improve traffic for those that prefer staying on the ground, it may prove dangerous in the beginning because of accidents in the air with other cars, planes, trees, and buildings. Some would say though, that the convenience would outweigh the risks because there would not be traffic jams, or detours because of road work. These cars would need something like a GPS system and an anti-wrecking system so people would not run into each other or other objects (How Flying Cars Will Work).
