Rousseau argues in his Discourse on the Origins of Inequality that inequalities are created by social construction. Naturally, inequalities do not exist, but because man creates boundaries and distinguishes one another, political and moral inequalities are created. Since the 18th century, during Rousseau’s time, the history of inequalities have changed, and ideas of imperialism, racism, and sexism have shifted between then and the 20th century. Private property was a leading cause of inequalities according to Rousseau. Owning property created differences between man, as they could be arranged on different ranks, and the more land one owned, the more powerful. During the Enlightenment, slavery was used as forced labor, assuming many African Americans as an inferior race comparably to the Europeans and Americans. In a slight improvement, the Slave Trade Act of 1794 abolished slavery in the United States, and slowly spread east into the European countries, yet the race of people from Africa were still considered inferior. Because of the increase in imperialism during the industrial era, racism continued as the people of colonial settlements were seen as a race that need to become “civilized”. During the Dreyfus Affair (1894-1899), anti-Semitic beliefs were proven even after Jews gained political rights earlier in the 18th century. Jews and modernity were seen as analogous and were associated with the failures of the state. At the peak of racist ideas, World War II and the Holocaust caused a massive increase in anti-Semitic beliefs, as the Nazi party murdered millions of Jews within Germany and its controlled territories. Hitler, the leader of the Nazi party during the Holocaust, believed that a “person 's characteristics, attitudes, abilities, and behavior were determined by his or her so-called racial make-up,” reasoning that the Jews were an inferior race to the Aryans caused a mass genocide which killed over six million Jews (“Victims”). Women during the Enlightenment were seen as a necessity, where men were dependent on the skills of women, “there is one which makes the sexes necessary to each other,” (Rousseau 21). During the era of the French Revolution, Napoleon set up a patriarchy, declaring that females were inferior to males. But by the end of the 19th century the modern woman emerged, a women who was educated, working, and involved in politics. In the 19th century, only male suffrage existed, but by the end of World War I, female suffrage was passed in many countries, with the exception of Italy and France who passed women’s suffrage after World War II. During World War I, the usage of women in the work force increased their roles in society, as men were leaving to fight and the need for workers increased. This aided in the suffrage for woman as “suffrage was a ‘reward’ for women’s war efforts,” yet many people still had negative attitudes towards women becoming greater bread-winners than men (Hunt 823). In the post-Cold War era, media publicized the return of women to become perfect housewives, but the reality after the wars did not allow for this expected lifestyle as women continued to maintain jobs to provide for their families. The Enlightenment is known as the revolution that brought to question the traditional political and social structures. This included the question of the woman’s traditional roles in society. As the public sphere relied more and more ?? and the advances in scientific and educated thinking, women sought to join in with the ranks of their male counterparts. Women held gatherings known as salons where they organized intellectual conversations with their distinguished male guests. Seeking to further their status, enlightened women published pamphlets and other works advocating for educational rights and political recognition. Even with this evolution of woman in society, many still clung to the belief that the role of the woman was solely domestic. The females that spoke up were usually deemed unnatural. However these women used the time period of reason and science that allowed them the opportunity to break away from their domestic roles and alter the view of women in society.
Today, women and men have equal rights, however, not long ago men believed women were lower than them. During the late eighteenth century, men expected women to stay at home and raise children. Women were given very few opportunities to expand their education past high school because colleges and universities would not accept females. This was a loss for women everywhere because it took away positions of power for them. It was even frowned upon if a woman showed interest in medicine or law because that was a man’s place, not a woman’s, just like it was a man’s duty to vote and not a woman’s.
He also argued that the advancement of art and science had not been beneficial to mankind. He proposed that the progress of knowledge had made governments more powerful, and crushed individual liberty. He concluded that material progress had actually undermined the possibility of sincere friendship, replacing it with jealousy, fear and suspicion. In his "Discourse on the Origin of Inequality" he elaborated on the process of how social institutions must have developed into the extreme unequal rights of aristocratic France where the nobility and the church lived in luxury while the poor peasants had to pay most of the taxes. And in his "Discourse on Political Economy" he suggested remedies for these injustices.

The function of women in politics, the economy, and communal events in American society moved significantly from the pre-Revolutionary war era to the early beginnings of the 20th century. In the years leading up to the American Revolution, women were looked upon as being “subordinate to males” and so as a result women were affected by the laws and regulations forced upon them by men. It was almost as if it was a woman’s right, to get married, have kids, and live out the obligation of being a thorough wife and mother. Because the government was mainly ruled and controlled by men, it was often that women didn’t have the lawful rights, for example the power to vote or be in possession of property.

Society has long since considered women the lessor gender and one of the most highly debated topics in society through the years has been that of women’s equality. The debates began over the meaning between a man and woman’s morality and a woman’s rights and obligations in society. After the 19th Amendment was sanctioned around 1920, the ball started rolling on women’s suffrage. Modern times have brought about the union of these causes, but due to the differences between the genetic makeup and socio demographics, the battle over women’s equality issue still continues to exist. While men have always held the covenant role of the dominant sex, it was only since the end of the 19th century that the movement for women’s equality and the entitlement of women have become more prevalent. “The general consensus at the time was that men were more capable of dealing with the competitive work world they now found themselves thrust into. In Rousseau’s book “A Discourse On Inequality”, he looks into the question of where the general inequality amongst men came from. Inequality exists economically, structurally, amongst different generations, genders, races, and in almost all other areas of society. However, Rousseau considers that there are really two categories of inequality. The first is called Natural/Physical, it occurs as an affect of nature. It includes inequalities of age,, health, bodily strength, and the qualities of the mind and soul. The second may be called Moral/Political inequality, this basically occurs through the consent of men. This consists of the privileges one group may have over another, such as the rich over the poor.
Both Aristotle's “Politics” and Jean Jacques Rousseau's Discourse on Inequality address the natural right and superiority of man and his subsets. In his piece, Aristotle discusses the emotional feeling of superiority, while Rousseau discusses the more logistical aspects. Together, their writing begs the question of the morality of slavery. Aristotle seems more willing to accept slavery as a natural creation by humans, however, in the end both of their pieces show the immorality and abnormality of slavery. Rousseau and Aristotle both believe that some people are naturally superior to others, and together they create a well-rounded understanding of how superiority complexes are justified.

In his Discourse on Inequality, Rousseau hypothesizes the natural state of man to understand where inequality commenced. To analyze the nature of man, Rousseau “strip[ped] that being, thus constituted, of all the supernatural gifts he could have received, and of all the artificial faculties he could have acquired only through a lengthy process,” so that all that was left was man without any knowledge or understanding of society or the precursors that led to it (Rousseau 47). In doing so, Rousseau saw that man was not cunning and devious as he is in society today, but rather an “animal less strong than some, less agile than others, but all in all, the most advantageously organized of all” (47).
