Critical Thinking-The Equation of Life
Abstract: Critical thinkers are active in their process of the mind. Many times people use critical thinking and do not realize we are even doing so. Critical thinking/logic has had a long history in math. This critical and systemic process is used for problem solving, evaluation, analysis, and synthesis. In this paper I will discuss the history of critical thinking and how we use critical thinking in the form of mathematical applications.
Critical Thinking-The Equation of Life
Critical thinking is a vital element in arithmetic. It separates those that can do calculations to those that cannot. Through repetition and memorizing, learners grow into more assured students. Scholars who have been taught to think analytically about arithmetic can explain how a method works, often not only solving the problem, but also clarifying the reasoning behind the practice they used to reach a resolution.

This is because it is assumed with familiarity of these concepts will allow students of these theories be an integral part of helping the United States economy to expand and thrive (Wilson, 2013).
As a direct result of this assumption it is critical that we as educators teach our children/pupils the importance of Critical thinking in these fields of study. For example, elementary math teachers can help students build their critical thinking and problem solving skills by asking them to look for a logical structure when solving math problems and back up their answers with verifiable evidence. “It’s no longer about what a student knows, it’s about what they can do with what they know,” assistant superintendent Kimberly Beck said, according to The Ridgefield Press (Wilson,
Critical thinking occurs when a person thinks about a subject or problem to where the improvement of the quality of ones own thinking using skillful analogies, then assessing and reconstructing them. A few important skills that is learned through critical thinking is learning how to discipline oneself in thinking, understanding the world as well as learning themselves. Critical thinking in the business world has many benefits in the process of decision making by employers as well as employees.
Critical thinking provides an opportunity to explore the positive and negative sides of an argument for and against an idea, theory or notion. Reasoning and perception is attuned to personal impression and provides outcome to belief and opinion.
Critical thinking can be defined as "learning to think better by improving one 's thinking skills." Individuals who are critical thinkers use the thinking process to analyze (consider and reflect) and synthesize (piece together) what they have learned or are currently learning. Unfortunately, much
It is a source of education and a powerful resource in the life of every individual and in social life. Despite the fact that the identification and analysis of critical thinking skills are beyond the boundaries of a single discipline or subject, the learning and application of these skills require possession of certain knowledge. The value of critical thinking is lost if it is treated as a list of logical operations, and the possession of certain knowledge is regarded simply as a collection of information. The investigation of the relationship of a value judgment and the actual use may lead to a new assessment of the need for common concepts of critical thinking and the possession of certain knowledge in education (Paul,
Critical thinking is when an individual identifies and evaluates outside sources before making a decision. This is a very important still to learn to become an effective thinker and making educated choices. Critical thinking is fundamental when making choices, from selecting the right answer on multiple choice exams to choosing the right place and time to buy a house. An individual that has learned critical thinking is less expected to make poor choices that could potentially harm him or affect others. In theory this individual could calculate the consequences of his actions. A good critical thinker doesn’t need to memorize huge amounts of information. Instead, he asks questions, is open to alternative solutions, formulates theories,
The elements of reasoning play an important role in critical thinking. The element of reasoning is important in that it helps to develop objectives. This means that in reasoning a problem can be solved as there is a goal or purpose that needs to be fulfilled. Critical thinking entails assessing data and it is through this that reasoning takes place because it allows for a logical conclusion to be made which can be seen as the goal or objective. It is crucial though, that intellec...
Critical thinking has been defined in great depth over thousands of years yet comparison of many of these definitions show the emphasis alters between what characteristic is deemed most important for each individual. However the definition alters, the same three important principles are always included: scepticism, open-mindedness and objectivity. It is important for each individual to conclude his or her own definition of critical thinking to enable a specific authenticity that equates to an individuals academic work. This essay will show that while the true meaning of critical thinking doesn’t change, adapting a personal definition is vital for success in higher education and life skills.

What is not easily recognized is the fact that the very fabric of life is dependent on the ability to think properly and make good decisions. Improper thinking is costly in the quality of life and monetarily. The result of a critical thinker that has worked to cultivate proper thinking skills includes: the ability to ask vital questions and to identify problems with clarity. A critical thinker also collects relevant information while effectively interpreting it, thinks with an open mind, uses alternative systems of thought, and understands how to communicate while working to formulate a strong solution. In summary, critical thinking is self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. Above all else, the standards of excellence are rigorous, and it entails the prospect of overcoming the challenge of sociocentrism and
Critical thinking is a significant and essential topic in recent education. The strategy of critical thinking skills helps identify areas in one's courses as the suitable place to highlight, expand and use some problems in exams that test students' critical thinking skills.
Mathematics can be concrete and use reason as a way of knowing. These are learned concepts with repetitive procedure. Critical thinking is a type of reasoning that uses logic that will never deviate. The early concepts of mathematics taught in schools are thought to be concrete with fixed steps and formulas for solving problems. One only has to think about the steps previously taught and accept them to be true. The concepts can only be accepted to be true by using the skills to process and generate information and belief. The use of the skills as an “exercise” with no meaning or understanding is not critical thinking however. It is always believed that the area of a right triangle is one half the base times the height. Reasoning can be used through the drawing of a grid to prove this formula to be true. Therefore, mathematics uses critical thinking as a way of known skills to guide behavior based on intellectual commit...

According to Robert Ennis, critical thinking is “reflective reasoning about beliefs and actions. Critical thinking is reasonable reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or do.”
I think that critical thinking is important in ever aspect of education, but I believe it’s utilized more in the field of Social Studies, where the student has to make a decision based upon primary and secondary sources to draw from. An example would be after watching a video over history the students would form an opinion. Though the use of critical thinking questions such as how does the information connect with the knowledge that the class has already learned about the subject, how might the new inform...
Critical thinking regularly involves the capability to interpret information and make knowledgeable decisions based on such information. Additionally, problem solving is frequently theorised as the use of critical thinking skills towards the effective solution of a specific problem or towards a specific end goal. Critical thinking is the disciplined art of ensuring that you use the best thinking you are capable of in any set of circumstances. The general goal of thinking is to figure out some situation” (Critical Thinking, 2001, p.1), solve some problem, answer some questions, or resolve some issue. It also is a process in which a person pursuits reliable and pertinent information about the world. Critical thinking is often described as reasonable, ruminative, trustworthy, and a well-practiced form of thinking that assists people with deciding what they should believe in and what actions should be taken. A practiced critical thinker will ask good questions, collects pertinent data, categorizes common characteristics, logically reasons with the new data and then he or she will come to a trustworthy and dependable conclusion. Critical thinking makes use of many processes and procedures. Some processes include but is not limited to asking questions, making judgments, and identifying
