Washing the Brains of Many and Shocking the World with Advances in Genetic Engineering Opinions? Yes everyone has an opinion but that doesn’t give them the right to press and force their opinion onto other people. Brain washing is a very extreme form of persuasion. Physiological abuse is what the people claim that the brain washing technique is. The word brain washing came from as early as the Korean War when American soldiers saw communism first hand. Although having everyone on the same page can be nice, brain washing should not exist and be against the law because people should be able to decide and control their own life instead of being persuaded to do what other people want them to do. Brain washing is wrong on so many different levels. When people are being brain washed they are not given the opportunity to think and act on their own. Some people might say that brain washing is a thing of the past, but in all honesty, it is not. Some type of brain washing is happening every day and people may not even see it. In Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World, they started brain washing the people of their community at a very early age. In the novel they had the motto of “Community, Identity, Stability” and the people lived their lives by it. Today in our world we have brain washed people by extremely persuading them to pay taxes, to follow all the rules the government has laid out for us, we have the democratic and republican parties control and actions to elect people into office, and the whole idea that making kids go to college will guarantee them a better life. The devices we use to create such persuasion are statistics and media such as the news, radio, and electronic devices. These devices aren’t needed for brain washing ... ... middle of paper ... ...a way is committing suicide of yourself as an individual. Being an individual starts at birth when you are no longer attached to your mother by an umbilical cord. The scientific breakthroughs with genetic engineering have created lives and have showed signs of hope for many people out there in this great big world. This essay may be considered a form of brain washing to persuade you as a reader to believe that my way of thinking is right and that all of these breakthroughs in science are great and brain washing is bad, but that’s not at all what I’m trying to do. You as a reader should believe what you want without my opinions affecting yours. Extreme persuasion is brain washing, and if I brain washed you as a reader to believe that my views are right or if I have changed your views on these topics, then I have created a perfect example of how brain washing works.
A person's individuality begins at conception and develops throughout life. These natural developments can now be changed through genetically engineering a human embryo. Through this process, gender, eye and hair color, height, medical disorders, and many more qualities can be changed. I believe genetically engineering a human embryo is corrupt because it is morally unacceptable, violates the child's rights, and creates an even more divided society.
The use of bioethics to alter one’s physical and mental happiness is portrayed as deceitful to many. This critical analysis evaluates an essay that pledges justification for self-improvement as morally right. The essay, “Bioengineering and Self-Improvement,” was written by Arthur Caplan, professor of bioethics and the University of Pennsylvania and director of Center for Bioethics. As presented in the essay, the author is supports using technology in improving one’s vigor and appearance. In fact, he declares that bioengineering improves one’s self through boosted confidence and self-respect. The author furnishes strong points and his essay is convincing of positive outcomes provided with biotechnology. The author has effectively proven this
Brainwashing… does it exist now? In Aldous Huxleys book, Brave New World, people are grown from tubes, and then psychologically conditioned to behave and act the way the World State, or government per say, wants them to act. Sometimes psychological conditioning can be good, but in this case it is more of a type of brainwashing. The World State misuses its power to make sure people are controlled because they don’t want anyone to be unhappy or to know what is actually happening. This book can be a warning to humanity, telling society that brainwashing can become common and destroy the modern day world. This book makes the people of the modern day world think about what could happen in the near future if society decides to go farther and more into scientific research. Misuses science could contribute to the making of man into an animal, not a smart, adapted, emotional connected human being.
The ethics behind genetic engineering have been discussed and argued for years now. Some arguing points often include competitive advantages, playing God, and the polarization of society, but Sandel takes a different approach in explaining society’s “unease” with the morality of genetic engineering. Broadcasted through several examples throughout the book, Sandel explains that genetic engineering is immoral because it takes away what makes us human and makes us something else. He states that by taking control of our genetic makeup, or the makeup of our progeny, we lose our human dignity and humility. Our hunger for control will lead to the loss of appreciation for natural gifts, whether they are certain talents, inherited from the genetic lottery, or the gift of life itself.

Many people often ask, “Is it acceptable for human beings to manipulate human genes” (Moral and Ethical Issues in Gene Therapy). Most of the ethical issues centralize on the Christian understanding of a human being. They believe God made them the way they are and people should accept their fate. The Society, Religion and Technology Project have researched and found that countless people are curious if gene therapy is the right thing to do. They have a problem with exploiting the genes a person is born with due to the fact they consider it to be “playing God” (Moral and Ethical Issues in Gene Therapy). They are also concerned with the safety. On account of the unfamiliar and inexperienced technology. Gene therapy has only been around since 1990, so scientists are still trying to find the best possible way to help cure these diseases. Multiple scientists are cautious with whom they share their research. For the reason that if it were to get into in the wrong hands it could conceivably start a superhuman race. Author Paul Recer presumes using germline engineering to cure fatal diseases or even to generate designer babies that will be stronger, smarter, or more immune to infections (Gene Therapy Creates Super-Muscles). Scientists could enhance height, athleticism and even intelligence. The possibilities are endless. Germline engineering, however, would alter every cell in the body. People would no longer have to worry about the alarming and intimidating combinations of their parents’ genes. Genetic engineers are able to eliminate unnatural genes, change existing ones or even add a few extra. Like it or not, in a few short years scientists will have the power to control the evolution of
There is always debate over human genetic engineering. Disputes over human genetic engineering concern the means for achieving assumed ends, rather than being a healthy discussion about the ends themselves. This book not only explores how decisions about the ethics of human genetic engineering are made, but also shows how the structure of the debate has led to the technological choices we now face.
The mind is beyond fascinating. Throughout the years Brainwashing is something that has been spoken about more often. The fact that a person can convince a person to do an action that a person wouldn’t do in their right mind is mind blowing to me. Although, I believe it happen so many times throughout the world that many people aren’t aware of. In my mind, of course, I think I would not be able to fall into the trap of brainwashing, but many people who are recovered victims of such incident say the same statement. It is scary, but fascinating to know that one person would completely control every action and thought you do throughout their life. If you think about it long enough, you take on roles of your parents as you grow older. This in a sense is a type of control as brainwashing is, especially in a young, venerable stage of your life. If a parent can create that type of control over their child than why couldn’t a trusting person
As the mind matures and grows, new opinions are formed with the help of the revolutionizing consciousness of humanity. The human conscious allows humanity to develop individually and gain unique cognitive patterns and thinking processes. However, these opinions can be manipulated by environmental sources, like the media. The media’s puppet strings can be used to influence the minds of the masses and control their overall thinking process. It takes away an individual’s freedom to think for themselves and form their own opinions. Manipulation is a key ingredient in attaining support for a side of an argument. News networks have this ability to twist the minds of their listeners and unconsciously force them to believe in their words. Two of the
In the novel Brave New World by Aldus Huxley, brainwashing was used in the form of hypnopaedia also know as sleep teaching. Hypnopaedia is similar to the form we use in modern television. Huxley uses hypnopaedia in the novel Brave New World to control the society’s thoughts. Modern television uses subliminal messages to tell the viewer when you see product A buy product B. Huxley used this in his book by using subliminal message to give the certain classes of humans purpose in life. The whole purpose of hypnopaedia is to have control over society’s thoughts.
Eugenics is not some far-fetched idea that is unregulated and is going to be implemented without any specific rules or regulations.
Brainwashing and Mind Control are “best thought of as a series of techniques that are used over time to shape a person’s perception, cognition, emotions, decision making and behavior to such an extent that they have lost their freedom of choice” (Mind Control Today). These techniques, once in existence within authoritarian and totalitarian governments, are increasingly being practiced by advertising companies and mass media. There are extensive similarities among the political and economic standards that cause negative impacts on society, as a result of adopting these mind control tactics. As Malcom X pointed out, “The media is the most powerful entity on earth, because they control the minds of the masses”.
Contrary to the saying “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” in some cases it does. People allow their attitudes about others to be shaped by the belief that people will turn out exactly like their relatives. However, as shown in the Carrie Buck story, that is not always true. There is no such thing as a perfect person so eugenics cannot create one. Although, it sounds good to say the incarcerated, mentally ill, or homeless don’t need to produce children that our tax-paying society has to pay for. It is still morally wrong and we nor any other person have the right to take that away from them.
Since the beginning of scientific research, the information discovered has led to many technological breakthroughs and advancements at a rapid pace. The velocity of the incoming discoveries may allow one to overlook the powerful emphasis we as humans hold over human life itself. While human research has been developing an understanding of Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) since Friedrich Miescher isolated the double-helix shaped molecule, efforts in recent decades to map the human genome have instigated a great amount of opportunity to the potential manipulation of the basic elements of life. This potential had escalated to a reality by 2001, as the first genetically altered babies had been born and were confirmed by scientists to be genetically altered. These successful operations have sparked a mass overflow of possibility and further technological advancements with regard to human genetic modification (Whitehouse). While there is an enormous amount of potential in human genetic modification, there is an equal amount of controversy that questions the ethics of such practices. For example, should the ability to modify a child’s genetic code be viewed as a technological possibility, or should it be a social obligation to ensure that all children are disease-free? Should it be the parents’ right to modify their unborn child’s genetic code to whatever they wish or see fit? Or should the fetus hold the right to live a life without genetic modification? There are many valid arguments for both positive and negative aspects of human genetic engineering. To make a claim concerning the ethics of human genetic engineering, one must analyze each potential point in order for their opinion to hold validity.
Indoctrination is essentially the act of teaching or inculcating a set of beliefs without questioning those beliefs. At the outset, indoctrination is a questionable practice if it prevents critical inquiry and reflection and it can be argued that it is morally wrong if it obstructs rational and independent thinking. Inculcating faith or beliefs can be seen as a worthwhile goal if learners are equipped with the necessary
