One of his major failures was the attempt to take down Fidel Castro. “Shortly after his inauguration, Kennedy permitted a band of Cuban exiles, already armed and trained, to invade their homeland” (“The White House” ). The attack was a failure and many believe this might have been the reason he was murdered. But still the question remains who is responsible for his murder. BAY OF PIGS It seems that the United States has been one of the most dominant, if not the most dominant, countries in the world, since the Declaration of Independence. Yet, on Monday, April 17, 1961, our government experienced incredible criticism and extreme embarrassment when Fidel Castro, dictator of Cuba, instantly stopped an invasion on the Cuban beach known as the Bay of Pigs. President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, his advisors, and many Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officials, made the largest error of their political careers. Once the decision was made to invade Cuba, to end Castro and his Communist government, Kennedy and his administration were never looked at in the same light nor trusted again. Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev was affiliated with Castro, and the two countries made many military decisions together.
Another factor was a threat by the US to one of the Soviet Union's satellite countries, Cuba (Hersh 346). The United States had, in the past, attempted to kill Fidel Castro, dictator of Cuba (Brinkley 1047). In July of 1962, the United States found out that nuclear missile shipments were being made to Cuba. United States U-2 spy planes flew over the island, bringing back reports of construction and ballistic missiles ("Cuban" 744). The CIA found that five thousand Russian military technicians were in Cuba, and various military weapons were being unloaded onto the island.
The Soviets shipped sixty medium-range ballistic missiles (MRBMs) along with their warheads, launch equipment, and necessary operating personnel to Cuba. When United States President, John F. Kennedy discovered the presence of these offensive weapons, he immediately organized EX-COMM, a group of his twelve most important advisors. They spent the next couple of days discussing different possible plans of action and finally decided to remove the US missiles from Turkey and promise not to invade Cuba in exchange for the removal of all offensive weapons in Cuba. On October 28, Khrushchev sent Kennedy a letter stating that he agreed to the terms Kennedy stated, and the crisis ended. The Cuban Missile Crisis can be blamed on the insecurity of Cuba and the Soviet Union.
A commission headed by Chief Justice Earl Warren concluded in September 1964 that the sole assassin was Lee Harvey Oswald, a former U.S. Marine. Oswald, who was captured hours after the assassination in a nearby theater, was himself killed two days later by Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby while being moved from the city to the county jail. The state funeral of President Kennedy was watched on television by millions around the world. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. To this day JFK is still considered one of the nations best presidents.
The entire crisis began following the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, following which some called for President Kennedy’s resignation. When Castro appealed to the USSR for kelp, Khrushchev delivered missiles with the capability of launching a nuclear strike against the US. Thinking that Kennedy would take no action, Khrushchev began helping Cuba with the missile supply. These buildups were caught on film by the U2 spy planes flying reconnaissance missions over the area. When the photos were shown to the President the crisis began.
The 1,500 refugees were sent on a covert mission and landed at the Bay of Pigs on April 17, 1961. Despite having been trained by the CIA, the refugees were quickly crushed by Castro’s forces. Once word had reached the states, the Kennedy administration quickly came up with a cover up story. This story quickly toppled over, and it was clear that Washington was behind the attack. The Bay of Pigs wasn’t the only foreign policy incident that took place in Cuba; there was also the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The United States felt threatened about Cuban being 90 miles from florida spifly during Cuban Missile Crisis . So, many United states presidents tried to kicked Fidel Castro but failed multiple times.First, even though Fulgencio Batista starred in beginning as leader that benefited Cuban people, over time he became corrupted leader that lead to his downfall. “In September 1933 he organized the “sergeants’ revolt”; it toppled the provisional regime of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, which had replaced the dictatorial regime of Gerardo Machado y Morales” (The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica 1).”Carlos Prío Socarrás in March 1952, was widely welcomed. But he returned as a brutal dictator, controlling the university, the press, and the Congress, and he embezzled huge sums from the soaring economy. In 1954 and ’58 the country held presidential elections that, though purportedly “free,” were manipulated to make Batista the sole candidate”(The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica 1).“Faced with the collapse of his regime and with the growing discontent of his supporters, Batista fled with his family to the Dominican Republic on January 1, 1959”(The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica 1).Bastia ruled totalitarian rule, jailing anyone against him, using terrorist methods, and getting cash for him and his friends(The Editors ... ... middle of paper ... ... 2014. .
On the morning of November 23, 1963, the President flew to Dallas where he was to speak at a lunch held at the Trade Mart. As the presidential motorcade drove from Love Field toward the Trade Mart, it drove through Deally Plaza where Kennedy was shot. Shortly after the assassination of the President, Lee Harvey Oswald was apprehended as the alleged assassin. In 1991 10% of the American public agreed with the Warren Commission Report findings that Lee Oswald was JFK's lone assassin, however, over half of the American public believed that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was somehow involved. President Harry S. Truman created the CIA with the signing of the National Security Act (NSA) on September 15, 1947.
Fifty years ago, the Cuban Missile Crisis brought the not just the U.S but the world to the brink of nuclear warfare. In October 1962, a U.S. spy plane caught the Soviet Union trying to sneak nuclear missiles into Cuba, 90 miles off the U.S coast.Kennedy determined at that action could not stand. The crisis is generally considered as the moment in which the Cold War came closest to turning into a nuclear conflict. For fourteen days during October 1962, the world held its breath as John F Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev, the leader of the Soviet Union at the time, tried to reach an agreement and avoid nuclear war. In 1959 Fidel Castro took power in Cuba. One year after Castro takes Cuba, Cuba allies itself with the Soviet Union and their policies. Cuba becomes a communist country. The U.S were not very content with that so they ended any relation with Cuba.
