Over the years, hip hop music has been feeding young people music that is negative but is listened to in a positive way. The young people who listen to this music are encouraged by the lyrics of to inflict violence towards a woman. Sexism in hip hop music and videos exploit women to where the young people are more likely to disrespect them. When it comes to wealth respect and success plays a major role in hip hop music for a male dominated music industry. As hip hop feeds young people their music in a negative way, their more encouraged to the violence towards women, sexism, and wealth that tempts them every day.

Women are objectified in hip hop music videos as to wearing skimpy clothing, speaking seductively and dancing in a sexual manner. They are simply eye candy for the audience to gain attention as they are define as sexual objects and have no kind of independence. For example, Nelly’s Tip Drill became a controversial music video that displayed women in a degrading way. The women were wearing thong bikinis, just thongs, or were topless dancing provocatively against men or women as well. The type of message that it gives the young people, males of course, that you can have woman you want since they’ll do anything for you. From a female’s perspective who would have low self-esteem, she would take the message as to exploiting herself as the women in the music video and eventually received attention from men. Now if you reverse the roles of sexism in hip hop music, a female rapper would consider themselves as a “hip hop feminists,” to show men that they should be respected and not be degraded and submissive. For example, Queen Latifah, a hip hop artist, created Ladies First, a song that empowered women especially female rappers to let men know that they can be a successful in a male dominated genre. Hip hop is a form of art that African Americans have been using to get away from oppressions in their lives and allowed their voices to be heard in some type of way. As soon as big corporations seen the attention hip hop brought to the scene, they wanted to capitalize on it. These corporations picked specific types of attributes that some hip hop artists had and allowed it to flourish. The attributes that these artists carried were hypermasculinity, homophobia, violence and sexism. In the book, Hip Hop Wars by Tricia Rose discusses some of these specific attributes. Certains ideals such as hyper sexuality, material possesions, and hegemonic masculinity found in hip hop certainly highlights some of its negative aspects. Hip-hop in a sense at times can promote feminism in the sense of sexual freedom (at least in the lyrics provided) where certain songs condemn women for the same freedoms. It is suggested that many young people especially young black people begin to monitor and interrupt some of the messages and ideals that are taken in /followed. Personally the ideals in much of hip-hop do not reflect my own values or views on femininity or masculinity although I do listen to most of the music. Being an educated young black man I in a sense can see through most of the gimmicks and fads that of the music portrays and keep to my personal values more times than not. It was the first time I had ever been to a party. I had just graduated high school, and did not have nor ever did have any sort of interest in going to a party. One of my fellow classmates had invited me to her party on the night of graduation, and I decided why not? I was told growing up that I would never have contact with most of my classmates after graduation ever again, so I wanted to have one last fun moment with the graduating class of 2013. I arrived at my classmate’s house around nine, and immediately was overwhelmed by the makeshift dance floor in the backyard, the loud, unfamiliar music, and the disco lights. Growing up, I had never been introduced to rap music, so I did not enjoy it as much as my fellow classmates did. It did not take long for the party to get started. Boys and girls alike started to make their way to the makeshift dance floor, immediately dancing on one another. I was absolutely taken away as girls that I had known for four years bent over and began to press their backsides up against boys, grinding on the boys as if it were an everyday activity as degrading music blared out of the speakers, as if they were not aware of the actual lyrics of the song. I was not sure what made me feel sicker to my stomach: the way the girls moved their behinds in ways that I found impossible, which I later learned was called ‘twerking’, or the misogynistic rap music that my classmates danced to. I have not been to a party since then, and I do not think I ever will go to one again. Because it has become the fastest growing music genre in the U.S., companies and corporate giants have used its appeal to capitalize on it. Although critics of rap music and hip hop seem to be fixated on the messages of sex, violence, and harsh language, this genre offers a new paradigm of what can be (Lewis, 1998.) With this said, his warning to our future generations can be challenged. There are a growing number of people who purchase rap albums that support the fallacy that women are mere objects and should be treated as such. As the popularity of rap continues to climb at unprecedented rates, so too does its influence on the perception of women. In the vast majority of hip-hop songs, the depiction of women as sexual objects, the extreme violence directed towards them and the overall negative influence these lyrics have on the average adolescent's perception of women make rap the absolute epitome of female exploitation.
