Hip Hop has been an art form that has allowed artists to freely express their opinions and to convey their messages to listeners for quite some time. However, the messages of artists have transcended overtime and have generated an impression that the genre is overly violent and strives on materialism and capitalism. R.A.P, It has been in contemporary decades a controversial genre of music that has been forced to endure the forefront of mainstream media, and public, political moral panic. From the politically motivated verses of N.W.A to the dramatic East Coast- West coast rivalry that ultimately led to the violent, unsolved murders of icons Christopher Wallace (Notorious) and Tupac Shakur, it appears that political groups have resorted to enable this style of music as a moral panic and have made the decision that there is in fact a correlation between rap and youth violence. Despite continual criticism of rap and its supposed inherent violence, many overlook the empowering, and racially motivated reasoning to the existence of rap. Similar to other forms of grassroots forms of music, rap cannot be completely understood unless it is critiques outside its current context and understood for it’s historical, and grassroots inception. Popular rap music of a late modernal society does not reflect its initial hip hop culture of young, urban, blue collared Black men and women, the roots of rap lie in the verbal legacy of west Africans, its means as the speech of an otherwise racialized, and marginalized group have now expanded to include its ultimate appropriation and commercialization by music industries. In order to comprehend the complexity of rap, it is vital to analyze the entirety of rap including historical and political motives. If violence is to be tackled in the rap and hip hop genre one must first review the issue to its core which is the large disparity that exists in our society, and how rap has effectively become a means of resistance for those who must endure the structural injustice that exists in response to institutions of oppression that have further exacerbated the discrepancies in race, and class. To eliminate the nihilism present of the Black youth there must be a response to the rap, there is a necessity for scholars, and political powers to pick up the mic and drop a beat back to those who are listening with eager ears.
