To most people they believe that the Hip-Hop subculture is African American youth who tend to rebel against authority , graffiti walls breakdance beatbox and rap lyrics. Although some of these stereotypes may be true but there is deeper meaning to side of this. Hip-Hop conveys a voice or message about the feelings and the never ending struggles and the slow evolving successes of black urban youth in America. In order to understand the culture of Hip-Hop one must define Hip-Hop first. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary Hip-Hop is “stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rap”( Webster). However, Hip-Hop subculture is a lifestyle with its own language, unique fashion, music, and mindset that is continually evolving. Hip-Hop is popular today because of its universal appeal worldwide, because of its ability to be highly imitative, and last but not least, because it is literally everywhere. There is a theory that hip hop music promotes violence and criminal behavior such as gangs, murder, and drug dealing. The lyrics of some rappers songs are explicit, vulgar, and have a lot of profanity. Some rappers are degrading women by calling the names and having them dancing half naked in their music videos. Women are seeing as object to them. It shows that men have no respect for women and that women do not have respect for themselves. The positive effect Hip-Hop music has had is, it provided another way for youth to express their artistic expression. It allows the youth to tell a story in way they can be heard. Originating in the urban Bronx area of New York hip-hop culture emerged in the 1970’s as a way for minorities to form identifies and social status. Contemporarily, hip-hop has evolved to contain numerous activities such as, “spoken word poetry, theater, clothing styles, language, and some forms of activism,” (Petchauer). Also, in his Journal of Black Studies, author Tobey S. The area’s mostly African American and Puerto Rican residents originated this uniquely American musical genre and culture that over the past four decades has developed into a global sensation impacting the formation of youth culture around the world. The South Bronx was a whirlpool of political, social, and economic upheaval in the years leading up to the inception of Hip-Hop. The early part of the 1970’s found many African American and Hispanic communities desperately seeking relief from the poverty, drug, and crime epidemics engulfing the gang dominated neighborhoods. Hip-Hop proved to be successful as both a creative outlet for expressing the struggles of life amidst the prevailing crime and violence as well as an enjoyable and cheap form of recreation.

Whips and chains have played an important role in Black American’s oppressive history. In the days of slavery, chains were used to dehumanize us, restrain us and keep us from escaping our oppression, while whips were used to reinforce the oppression and our inferiority as a race. Today, literal whips and chains no longer represent the oppression of Black Americans; they have been replaced with the drive to obtain modern day “whips and chains”, or simply put, material possessions- a new, slightly self-imposed slavery. This is evident in the unifying factor of hip-hop music, which glorifies a lavish lifestyle sometimes at the cost of morals, values, and self worth.

In Subculture Theory many theorists were interested in explaining delinquent gangs, which were believed to be the most common form of delinquency. The Subculture Theory was made up of several different theories that were all related to each other. Subculture theories provided explanations of how groups of individuals develop similar values and rationales for behavior (Williams & McKay, 2014). One theory within Subculture Theory was called the delinquent subculture theory by Albert Cohen. Another theory in the Subculture Theory was the differential opportunity formed by Richard Cloward and Lloyd Ohlin. The third theory by Walter Miller used direct observation of social groups in their natural setting. All four theories were interest in of the Subculture Theory could develop (Williams & Mckay, 2014). The last major theory was very different theories and was created by Wolfgang and Ferracuti. All these theories in the Subculture Theory were very different but were all related in some way.
