In A Walk in the Woods our author, Bill Bryson, hikes through the deadly wilderness along the terribly long Appalachian Trail with his humorously witty companion Katz. Throughout the journey it becomes embarrassingly obvious that they will not be able to hike the entirety of the trail. The idea that they will not completely finish it begs the question; have Bryson and his faithful companion Katz actually hiked the Appalachian Trail? Katz gave his own account of whether or not they have hiked the trail when he states,” As far as I’m concerned, I hiked the Appalachian Trail. I hiked it in snow and I hiked it in heat. I hiked it in the South and I hiked in the North. I hiked it till my feet bled. I hiked the Appalachian Trail, Bryson.” (Bryson 271). Bryson and Katz have had both terrible and amazing experiences along the trail, thus it should be said that they have in fact hiked the Appalachian Trail.

Should Bill Bryson be considered an Appalachian Trail hiker? Most thru hikers believe that the only type of AT hiker is a thru hiker. Critics even talk about how Bryson just hiked a portion of the trail. “[…]-- although he doesn't meet that many, because in the end he hikes less than half the route. The book is subtitled "Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail," but Bryson doesn't seem to have discovered very much at all.” (Friedman, Vanessa V. Even though critics and thru hikers say Bryson is not a real Appalachian Trail Hiker, he should be considered an AT hiker because he wrote A Walk in the Woods to inform everyone of his devotion to hiking most of the trail.
The primary historical event affecting the story happens before Bryson's journey on the trail. The Great Depression was the economic downturn of the United States. It caused the majority of Americans to become destitute and eager to find work to support themselves and their families. The drive to open a personal business was crushed by the harshness of the Great Depression. The empty building Bill saw on his journey were all remnants of the failed business endeavors. The historical setting of A Walk in the Woods also falls under the period where more individuals were leaving their rural lives to find opportunity in the city. The farming regions visited by Bill have been abandoned and forgotten by the people who once lived there. With the withdrawal of the human interference in those communities nature has come to reclaim its lost territory. The
Between 1840 and 1950, over fifty-three thousand people travelled the Oregon Trail. Native American exposure to diseases such as smallpox and diphtheria decimated the tribes, and that along with the encroachment of settlers on tribal lands, was the cause of much strife between Native Americans and the incoming Europeans. The Land Donation Law, a government land giveaway allotting three-hindred twenty acres to white males and six-hundred forty to married white couples, gave impetus to the western expansion and the American idea of "Manifest destiny." This promotion of migration and families also allowed America to strentghen its hold on Oregon, in the interests of displacing British claims.
Dangers and months of preparation aside, the American Discovery Trail it is a life changing event for anyone who decides to tackle the vigorous trail. When an individual sets out to cover over 6,000 miles, with nothing but the pack on his back, himself, and the wilderness around them, they find out things about themselves that they never knew. Nature has a way of helping people push themselves to the brink so that they may find themselves in the end. For anyone who is in the process of wanting to find themselves, needs a break, or simply wants a challenge, do the research and tackle the American Discovery Trail.
Overland pioneer route to the northwestern United States. About 3200 km, about 2000 mi long, the trail extended from Independence, Missouri, to the Columbia River in Oregon. Part of the route followed the Platte River for 870 km (540 mi) through what is now Nebraska to Fort Laramie in present-day Wyoming. The trail continued along the North Platte and Sweetwater rivers to South Pass in the Wind River Range of the Rocky Mountains. From there the main trail went south to Fort Bridger, Wyoming, before turning into the Bear River valley and north to Fort Hall in present-day Idaho. In Idaho the Oregon Trail followed the Snake River to the Salmon Falls and then went north past Fort Boise (now Boise). The route entered what is now Oregon, passed through the Grande Ronde River valley, crossed the Blue Mountains and followed the Umatilla River to the Columbia River. Shorter and more direct routes were developed along some parts of the trail, but they were often more difficult.
The Oregon Trail had an extensive impact on early America. It spread the population with approximately 50,000 people moving 2,000 miles west. The trail conceded of a group of paths. The route started in Missouri and finished in Oregon. The journey was 2,000 miles long and last about 5 months. With about 10 grave per mile by the end of a 30 year rage it was the longest graveyard in America. What was so bad with where they were at that they were willing to risk it all? Why was the rush to go west so vast? Every day the people were in fear that death was close by. What was so important to risk their lives and the lives of others for this odyssey?
Chisholm Trail When the railroads moved west to the Great Plains, the "Cattle Boom" began. Southern Texas became a major ranching area with the raising of longhorn cattle from Mexico. Cattle was branded by the rawhides who guarded them on horseback on the ranges. Before the Civil War, small herds of Texas cattle were driven by the cowboys to New Orleans, some as far west as California, and some to the north over the Shawnee Trail.
