Hypnosis is a well-known practice around the world. Most people are familiar with the most common form of it, which involves altering a person’s state of consciousness by . Although most people believe that they cannot be hypnotized, their belief is most likely incorrect. People usually do not think of the most common, though mild, forms of hypnosis, such as “zoning out,” “highway hypnosis,” and meditation. Zoning out occurs much more often than people think. It happens when we are doing something that is boring or unchallenging. Zoning out can also be referred to as mind wandering, daydreaming, or just being offline. According to Jonathan Smallwood and Jonathan Schooler, our minds spend up to 13% of the time zoned out. No matter how hard we try to stay focused on whatever task we are trying to do, we cannot prevent ourselves from zoning out. As …show more content…

Long-haul truck drivers call it white line fever, which is when a driver gets hypnotized by staring at white lines for a long time in an attempt to stay in a specific lane. The main causes for it, however, are fatigue, boredom, the ease of the drive, and even the monotony of scenery. Highway hypnosis was first noticed in 1921, when a paper was published about how people entered a “trance-like state” while traveling along long, dwindling roads. Another paper in 1929 theorized that people in similar situations tended to enter a sleep-like state without closing their eyes. Highway hypnosis can be a very dangerous thing, because it causes drivers to be unaware of their surroundings, making them more prone to being in an accident. There are ways to train someone to guard against highway hypnosis. For example, one doctor tried to train a teenager by first training him to relax deeply, and then to picture driving. He was then instructed to picture exciting scenes that required him to be alert. The longer he practiced this, the greater his ability to avoid highway
