High School Writing Process Analysis

Having attended high school for the past four years many of us have accomplished the act of analyzing articles and books as well as writing many papers to the extent of our abilities. High school english was meant to prepare us for college courses. High school introduced the five paragraph format and many organizational methods so that we could have strength and stability while writing papers at a college level. It also taught us how to analyze and annotate written articles, books and poems. Little did we know that those methods were only our training wheels. My teacher was a huge “goofball” and had a wandering glass eye. He taught the class how to properly write a thesis statement that included a subject, opinion and a consequence. We were reminded not to plagiarize. We were told to write the words that came to our mind and not from the mind of another. He was a huge role model in my writing career and to this day, I still hear his meaningful lessons in the back of my mind. The transition from high school writing to college writing has taken a toll on me. College professors push to override the “high school rules” and to get out of the rigid writing structure of the five paragraph essay. The five paragraph essay is not practical in college writing and will leave the professors discouraged and a poor grade will be given. It will take some time to get used to but I like the freedom of this writing style. According to Phil Saparov, “If you do learn how to write a college paper yourself, not only will you be empowered but you will open many more doors while attending your college without even knowing it.” (“How to Write a College Paper” 5). The more papers that I am assigned to write in the future, will strengthen my skills in researching the subject, gathering data, analyzing it and then communicating it to my reader. This will lead me to gain confidence in my future writing and become a better
