High School Influence

College is an important decision to parents, but teenagers are more focused on social lives, rather than their careers. It is a difficult task to understand what their major should be, but more so where they are going to go to study that major. High school influence is the main factor which students base their college choice on, but the activities students choose in school effect where they go more than their out of school activities. It is a possibility where many environmental factors contribute to choices, while teenagers are not aware of it. For example, health, law enforcement, business, government, media, community activities, and sports recreation all are possible influences to where students choose to go to college. The US National Library of Medicine’s website states that “any environment which looks down upon smoking, doing drugs, and suicidal behavior can have a more positive result on whether students choose to attend college as a whole” (Robinson). Sports are an easy activity to participate in, which every passionate high school student hopes to get a college scholarship for. The University of Michigan scouts for well-rounded students to enroll within their school who participate in activities in and out of school. It would not matter if a high school student was on a travel soccer team, but was not on the varsity team at their high school. This is because colleges look for those who participate in sports within school and have excelling grades. Although, the University of Kansas looks for high school “graduates that participated in many activities both in and out of school” (Berkowitz).
