As a first-year college freshman, I came into the university with many expectations. My expectations lingered from the various subjects I encountered this semester. For example, the difference in high school and college course work; I thought the work would be totally difficult. I wondered if the material would be new, but also familiar. I also wondered if I would excel in the college level courses. As this fall semester moves on, I have realized that each experience I have had in my high school career has pushed me to achieve more in my college course work. Therefore, with my previous experience, I know it prepared me for my college learning experience. As English 101 comes to an end, I have noticed a major change in my writing. This essay challenged me to analyze another author’s work. During this assignment, I was faced with one of William Shakespeare’s works, Portia’s Speech. As I analyzed the video and poem of Portia’s speech I was challenged to figure out what was Shakespeare’s purpose of the specific work. One thing that this essay taught me was the importance of multiple drafts in the writing process. Prior to this essay, I did not understand how to take advantage of the revision process to clarify and perfect my ideas. To perfect my ideas, I received assistance from the university writing center. The tutors there helped me write down the important points from the text and video. This simple strategy helped me drastically with constructing my analysis. I went on to get more assistance with my third and the final essay as well. My final essay for this class, on the status of our 2016 presidential election, was I think, by far my most advanced work of writing ever. Previously I had always had difficulty reaching minimum page limits because I did not properly know how to explain my ideas. As stated earlier, I would word vomit or add extra fluff to my paper because of this very reason. This final paper was the first time that I feel I have ever fully analyzed the outside information that I have included in an
William Shakespeare's life is a mystery even if his works have been read by millions of people. "The Bard" is one of history favorite characters. His plays are some of the best written in history. William Shakespeare's word, life and his work in the globe theater aren't as familiar to people as they feel.
The teacher will evaluate the students’ comprehension of the lesson through the participation of the students in the class discussion, the quality of student responses to the paired translation exercise, and from the homework of the remaining passages to translate which were not discussed in class.
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of writing that was required ended up helping me in so many ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me so much for college and real life.
English Composition II has unexpectedly improved my writing into an academic level. As I studied various English reading and writing courses, this class “English Composition II” did not immediately caught my eye. However as I researched about the concepts of this class, the decision to make was not so difficult since I was lacking in critical thinking and the interpretation of works. Also as a Business Major, it made sense that the subject of English would be of interest to me and as a career requirement. During the first weeks, I thought that I would be fully prepared for this course after taking an accelerated course in English during the spring semester. However, after attending class for about a month, I certainly did not expect to learn an entirely new process of writing
Do you think Shakespeare should be taught in schools? If you say no, then let me tell you why you are wrong; most people believe that Shakespeare shouldn't be taught because it’s hard to comprehend or that doesn't relate to us, the readers. But in reality, it gives us a new perspective on how people must have lived back then or on how they responded to situations that we might never have to go through in our lives. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, we are introduced to two young adults that are enemies but they fall in love to show that love is blind and that is true love might exist ( even though they moved on from their previous crushes, Rosaline and Paris ) , this gives me the first situation I want to talk about, which is the problems teenagers or people in general have to deal with and those are love and relationships or commitment . People who say that it doesn't relate to us, please let me explain why it wrong; first, everyone, who has been in a relationship will know that relationship aren't always perfect because you will have problem, arguments, and obstacles.
William Shakespeare’s intellectual use of the English language is what brought him prosperity throughout his lifetime, and what brings us to tears and laughter in the modern world. The life of Shakespeare is of great importance to English literature because of his many contributions including poetry, stories, and plays. However, many people do not know that he also owned a business. “William Shakespeare was a professional actor, a businessman, and a playwright. Today, nearly four hundred years after his death his plays are still performed” (Greenhill and Wignall 4).
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
Although I know there is still much to improve on in my writing, I feel as though I have made tremendous strides for my first semester. I have grown as a writer, and I believe I have the potential to be a great writer. Throughout my many years left here at The College of New Rochelle, I will continue to work hard so that my final year here at the college I can look back at my writings from freshman year to see my improvement. Writing 101 has boosted my confidence and has made me a better writer today. I will take this confidence along with determination to my writing 102 class, and I hope the professor will continue the molding process that Professor smart has started.
Across the Universe of Time: Shakespeare’s influence on 21st century society. It is harder to imagine a more universal writer than William Shakespeare. Rarely, if ever, is one of his many plays not being performed anywhere in the world and similarly rare is the tertiary English student who has not examined his work at length. His plays, sonnets and poems are common fodder for high school English departments across the globe.
As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
Throughout my highschool career, my writing has no doubt changed for the better. I now know how to express myself in a more professional and coherent manner. In literature class, I have learned different writing skills and methods to properly analyze literary works. I have also learned, critically, how to better synthesize disparate sources into a more seamless whole, which I think will be particularly crucial in my college years. I did somewhat arrogantly believe that there would not be that much of a significant improvement between the writing that I did freshman year and the writing that I’ve done so far senior year, but upon compiling my writing, I realize that there has been quite a striking change.
