What do Superman, firefighters, soldiers, doctors, and Caitlyn Jenner all have in common?-- They are heros. The definition of hero is defined differently by each person. It is a common adjective, with a variety of meanings. For one person a hero is one who protects the city from crime such as superman, while another may say a hero is one who saves people from a burning building. In the same way Caitlyn Jenner formerly Bruce Jenner gave the transgender community a stronger voice to allow them to be heard. While the word hero may be given to many and defined differently by each, all these heros display selflessness and bravery. Beowulf came to fight Grendel as a form of payment for a personal debt he owes on behalf of his father to Hrothgar. Therefore, Beowulf shows up to fight Grendel for himself, rather than for his act of duty. This exhibits the opposite of a noble man. Beowulf does not represent a noble man because he fails to show fine personal qualities and high moral ideals, like a noble man should. Beowulf soly meets with Hrothgar so that he can can receive permission to slay Grendel. Grendel's death must be fulfilled so that Beowulf can claim his glory and fame. Allowing himself to be remembered, like his father before him. ”O king of Bright-Danes.../my one request Is that you won’t refuse me, who have come this far, The privilege of purifying Heorot, With my own men to help me, and nobody else. ”(427-433). Beowulf acts like he’s noble by begging Hrothgar to slay Grendel, when in truth he has to be there to pay off the debt. This isn't only way that Beowulf doesn't show nobility, this can be seen because he is not loyal to his kinsmen. This is recognized when Grendel attacks the mead hall, and Beowulf pretends to be asleep rather than fighting Grendel as soon as he sees him like the rest of his men. John F.Kennedy one of america's great leaders said, “Don’t ask what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” This is the level of heroic thought that Beowulf failed to achieve. Beowulf and his men should have been fighting for a greater cause with a more holistic affect on society, rather than for themselves. We are shown Beowulf's selfish ways during the fight with Grendel. “Human eyes were watching his evil steps (Grendel),Waiting to see his swift hard claws. Grendel snatched at the first Great, he came to, rip him apart/He (Grendel) stepped to another still body, clutched at Beowulf with his claws, grasped at a strong-hearted wakeful sleeper.” (26-31,36-37) Therefore, Beowulf was awake and watched his man die. But he didn't do anything to stop Grendel or to start fighting Grendel after the deed was done. Instead, the attitude of a truly heroic hero would be more concerned about group success than with success of their own goals.
A hero is a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities. The real heroes are Superman, firefighters, soldiers, doctors, and Caitlyn Jenner, with a great impact. A hero is one who,is courageous,noble, and selfless. However, Beowulf’s deeds and achievements are stained with greed,cowardness,dishonor, and the blood of the innocent.
