The idea of a hero can be perceived in different ways. People are usually defined as heroes due to personal life experiences or accomplishments. But I think that true heroes are just everyday people who are trying to do what’s right. A hero is someone who is determined to do what’s right no matter the cost, someone who is selfless in challenging situations. The two people in my life that I consider as heroes are Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and my mother Anne Mozingo.
My mother is my hero because at a young age my dad died unexpectedly of a brain aneurism when I was one and one half years old. Over the years she provided for me as a single mother and I am extremely grateful for her. I understand the difficulties she must have went through being a single mother but she did everything in her power to make my life as wonderful as possible from going to Bali and seeing the culture to sending me to a very nice private school. She provided everything I needed as a little kid and she also went out of her way to give me things I wanted aside from the things I needed. I feel myself fortunate to be her son and extremely thankful for all the love and gifts she has given me.
One of the most important characteristics of a hero is kindness and this completely explains my mom. I was about ten years old when I realized how much of a hero my mother is. I began to understand all the consequences and disciplinary actions inflicted on me were not her trying to be mean, but her teaching me simple life lessons and skills. As I grow up I hope to see more progress towards equality and fairness for all, and fewer instances racism in sports and people paying women unfair wages. My mother is the most influential woman in my life. I feel fortunate for being born as her son. She is always there for me and I feel that there is no other person nearest to my heart than my mother. Luckily, we had Martin Luther King, Jr. and Anne Mozingo who inspire us, make us happy and make our world a better place.

In life, there could be multiple ideas on what heroism really mean. Many people would be curious about what it would take for them to become a hero. In the short story “The Mystery of Heroism” by Stephen Crane, a young union soldier’s name Fred Collins, who is engaging in a devastated war, decided to take a risk of running across a raging battlefield in order to retrieve water from a well for his fellow soldiers. Collins reveal the essence of bravery and courage by endangering his life to retrieve water for his fellow soldiers but at the same time he also did it to assist himself. A hero is someone who invests their time helping others rather than themselves. They are always conscious of their surroundings and environment. Heroes help their enemies and friends regardless of the circumstances. A hero is also someone who is humble and knows when to be protective of others and themselves. Heroes are people who acknowledge flaws, and fix mistakes, those were my own definition of a hero. In “Undocumented Immigrant”, Jose Antonio Vargas tells the truth about his illegal status in the United States. Not only was he an immigrant in the United States, he was his own hero. Vargas proved that he is a hero through code switching, bravery and honesty.
Dictionaries’ definitions of the word hero are exceedingly vague. A standard dictionary limits the definition of a hero to, “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities” (Dictionary.com). Heroes are people, not just men, who are generous, courageous, and take every event as part of the whole stream of life rather than as a critical moment. Humanity, endurance, and perseverance are other critical characteristics of a deserving candidate for such a title.
Loewen defines heroification as “a degenerative process (much like calcification) that makes people over into heroes” (Loewen 11). During this process, negative or controversial facts are often ignored or altered in regards to these heroes, which create “perfect creatures without conflicts, pain, credibility, or human interest (Loewen 11). When one changes or omits facts concerning figures in history for this type of glorification, we are left with an invented story of the event or person; in other words, history has become a myth. History textbooks are filled with these types of glorifications, especially older texts. The purpose of heroification is to present events or people in a favorable light and to give ideal role models in which to follow. In my own words, I call Loewen’s heroification an effective form of brainwashing. For example, I was always taught that the Civil War was fought to free slaves, but later learned this war was about states succeeding from the Union. Many people still believe the Emancipation Proclamation’s purpose was to free the slaves; however, it was actually the last resort Lincoln used to win the Civil War. Of course, this is not how these events were portrayed to most of us in History class. Heroification alters the purpose of these events so that we, as citizens, can feel proud that America did away with slavery because our forefathers felt it was morally wrong. Loewen also points out how heroification can lead to role models in the case of Helen Keller, “the blind and deaf girl who overcame her physical handicaps, as an inspiration to generations of schoolchildren” (Loewen 12). And it’s all thanks to my mother that I turned out the way I did. I wouldn’t have survived my younger years, both physically and mentally without her unwavering support and love. These situations have taught me more than I would have thought as a child. Even with the absence of a father for virtually all of my life, I would be confident in my abilities to provide everything I could to my children. I know from experience what is missing when there’s no father figure, and I would put my all into giving them everything that was missing from my life.
In today's modern times we hear the word hero all of the time. The news media throws the term around as if it is an everyday word. What exactly is a hero? Who, or what, can be classified as heroic? The correct definition of the word hero is: One invested with heroic qualities in the opinions of others. That is a fine definition for books and intellectual minds. To the average person, however, a hero is much more.
A person who overcomes antagonistic and unnecessary issues in a mature and powering manor. That is the definition of a hero to me. Someone who is being hurt and sees others hurt from the actions and takes charge and does everything in his power to change it. Someone who puts others before themselves and acts in the most chivalrous way. The definition of a hero is different for everyone. Some one might think of a hero as someone who can lift a car and put it on their back, or gives a dying person their kidney. Yes all of those people are forms of hero’s. You can’t tell someone that they are not a hero just because they don’t change into a disguise in a telephone both or can throw lightning bolts from a cloud. Everyone is a hero in their own way.
In my opinion, a hero is someone whose principal purpose, whether it be in one situation or over the span of their entire life, is to help others while simultaneously making the world a better place. When the word hero is brought up, the most prevailing image that comes to mind is superheroes like Batman and Superman. But I don’t think you have to have superpowers or even be well known in order to be a hero. There are people all over the world whose intention is to do selfless deeds and go out of their way for others without expectation of obtaining anything in return. I will start off by talking about my amazing mother and how she helped me out in the long run. My mother taught me to never rely on anyone that I can do whatever I set my mind to. She also told me that life is full of mistakes, and I would always learn from them. She taught me how to cook so if you ever want something to eat you know who to come to.
what is a hero? A hero doesn't always have to be have to be a special individual saving another hopeful soul from a burning building, or being born as an extraordinary individual who has the powers to save lives. A hero could be anyone whose daily acts go unnoticed, and could never be heard. People spend their days doing these things without any notice the act of heroism. Heros can be anywhere without anyone noticing these simple jobs that they do to help others. Heroes can be blind to the human eye but can be notice by the simple acts of strength and selflessness inside them. Although some hero acts go unheard of, heroes can be selfless people, who take up the courage to fight for things bigger than oneself.
When most girls write about their mothers they talk about how wonderful of a childhood they had being raised by such a great woman. They talk about her accomplishments and how they want to grow up and be just like her. They talk about the soup sick babble that every "perfect" family has to offer. When I write about my mother, I speak of the pain, the fears, the learning and the salvation. My Mother has been a great inspiration to me. She is my hero. Not because of the wonderful things she has done. Not because of the marvelous childhood I was given and certainly not because of her upbringing. My Mother is my hero because she was led down a path of destruction, but with God's grace and mercy she was pulled from her perils; and blessed.

When asked who their hero is, most people respond with the name of an athlete or an actress/actor. When asked who my hero is I would have to respond with a simple three letter word: mom. My mother has been the greatest inspiration in my life and is the main reason that I am where I am and who I am today.
