“Bob Riley once stated, “Hard times don’t create heroes. It is during the hard times when the “hero” within us is revealed.” Heroes never look to receive medals or trophies for their accomplishments, but the simple pleasure of knowing that they just saved or helped a person out is enough for them. A hero should always strive to have a positive outcome, but cannot become defeated when something does not go the way they planned it would. Sometimes a hero may fail, but they are only human, and humans make mistakes. While it is not always possible to save or satisfy everyone, heroism means taking action despite the arduous circumstances, and always giving your all even if you all is not enough.

For instance, a hero may be remembered for their bravery, but their positivity will be the first thing someone will remember. Sometimes being optimistic means giving your all even when you know your all is not enough. For example, in the article,”An Everyday Hero”, the author shares letters that had been written for Ana, a cancer patient. In the letters written for Ana, Ana’s husband tells the readers that heroes do not just have to wear capes. Just being optimistic is a way to show heroism. “Everyone who knows you admires the strength it takes to keep 16 ounces of the white Barium solution down. The courage to see several doctors a week to wait for sometimes disappointing news about the cancer”( An Everyday Hero 50). Another example that shows how being optimistic can be considered a characteristic of a hero, is in the poem “Moco Limping”, by David Nava Monreal. Monreal explains how Moco, the author’s dog, has only three legs and hobbles around. Even though Moco is a dog, his character and the way the author explains Moco shows that he is always positive. After the poet explains how Moco acts, he tells the reader,”My vain heart weeps knowing he is mine. But then he looks away and looks at me with eyes that cry out with life” (Monreal 13).
