In the film Hancock, Hancock is an archetypal hero because he follows the hero’s journey. Hancock is a vigilante superhero living in the outskirts of Los Angeles, California. His reckless ways cause the city of Los Angeles to essentially dislike the anti- hero. Hancock does more good for himself than he does for the city hence the “anti-hero”. He is disliked until he saves a man who links him to the journey of an archetypal hero. In the beginning of the movie the ordinary world for Hancock is living in the outskirts of Los Angeles in a trailer home. Ray also invites Hancock to dinner to suggest what Hancock should do to change in the eyes of the people in Los Angeles. Ray gives Hancock the challenge of turning himself in to the police for the damages he caused to the city. Ray hands Hancock a business card to help him out during the process of turning himself in. Hancock does not immediately turn himself in to the police, this is Hancock’s “refusal to the call”. As Ray appears to try and help Hancock throughout the film, he is Hancock’s mentor. Towards the end of the movie the enemies were reduces to the general population of criminals that trash the streets of Los Angeles. As Hancock builds allies and enemies as we see him approach his inmost cave. The moment when Hancock approaches the inmost cave is when a bank robbery with civilian hostages takes place. Watching a film, one can easily recognize plot, theme, characterization, etc., but not many realize what basic principle lies behind nearly every story conceived: the hero’s journey. This concept allows for a comprehensive, logical flow throughout a movie. Once the hero’s journey is thoroughly understood, anyone can pick out the elements in nearly every piece. The hero’s journey follows a simple outline. First the hero in question must have a disadvantaged childhood. Next the hero will find a mentor who wisely lays out his/her prophecy. Third the hero will go on a journey, either literal or figurative, to find him/herself. On this journey the hero will be discouraged and nearly quit his/her quest. Finally, the hero will fulfill the prophecy and find his/herself, realizing his/her full potential. This rubric may be easy to spot in epic action films, but if upon close inspection is found in a wide array of genres, some of which are fully surprising.
An anti-hero has the role of a hero thrust upon them. They do not particularly want to be brave or noble but their actions lead them to be a hero. Facing difficult decisions and doubt are also classic traits of an anti-hero. They often lack confidence in themselves, refuse to accept their fate as a hero or don't even realise their status or ability. At a certain point, anti-heroes usually transcend into either a tragic or romantic hero. Anti-heroes can be identified in many different texts, however, all of them consist of those traits.
The Hero's Journey is a theory created by Joseph Campbell and expresses the idea that most heroes are essentially the same person embodied in different ways. Lawrence C. Rubin describes the monomyth as, “The hero, or mythic protagonist, from birth to death is on a journey, replete with demons, both inner and outer, challenges both great and small, and a cast of characters, some enemies, others allies and companions” (265). The 2001 animation Osmosis Jones is no exception to this assumption. In the film, a white blood cell named Osmosis Jones goes on an epic adventure to save the life of Frank and prove himself to the people of his community. In the beginning of the movie, Osmosis starts off as an egotistical jerk who believes he can do everything on his own; however, as the film progresses, Osmosis realizes that sometimes two brains are better than one. Jones finds out the hard way that without a helping hand, there is little he can achieve alone. Osmosis’s journey through the monomyth develops the theme of teamwork because help from others proves to be essential to Osmosis’s triumph.
A hero’s journey is an important aspect of any movie. Sports films give a good indication of how the hero’s journey is trying to be portrayed. In the movie “The Rookie” is a 2002 film starring Dennis Quaid as Jim Morris who is a small town teacher finds himself playing baseball for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays farm system after an open tryout. Directors go through the journey closely isolate each particular aspect giving clear indication from one transition to the next.
The road back for Hancock is when he is in the hospital and Marry tells him about their past. He learns about the two movie tickets and why he lost his memory. What defines a hero? Is it the amount of courage and individual has that makes them a hero? Could a person become known as a hero simply from their achievement? Are noble qualities required of a person that is considered to be hero? The definition of a hero lies in the eye of the beholder. In my eyes, Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams displayed amazing courage, accomplished outstanding achievements, and had noble qualities, and that is why I believe that Hershel “Woody” Williams was a true hero.
An English proverb states, “ A hero is a man who is afraid to run away”. I agree with this proverb, because when you see a hero in a comic book, they have super cool back stories, are not afraid to fight, and stare danger in the face and not blink. They are not afraid of anything. That’s nice to look up to, but they are not real. Our definition of a hero is too much for one man to become, you can do something honorable, heroic, but you will never actually be a hero because it's too much, in real life. Heroes don’t just do it so they can get paid, or respect. What really determines whether someone is a hero is if they choose to do something about it in a bad situation. We have people that do heroic acts, for example, people putting their lives before others. Those people cannot be heroes because they get paid to do it, they are, firefighters, cops, and military, they get paid to help people, so they aren't considered a hero.
In the movie “Boyz in the Hood” director John Singleton, paints a clear image of the problems that happen very often in the African American communities. The movie deals with issues such as: the importance of a father in a young man’s life, the ongoing violence of black on black crime, and how black people are put in situations where they are put to fail and not succeed in life.

When you think about heroism, who comes to mind? Did you think of someone such as Superman, Sherlock Holmes, or your parents? Regardless of whom you choose, what characteristics of this hero embody your ideology of heroism? Historically, heroes were bronzy men with bulging muscles who slew villainous oppressors. Yet to my own belief, modern-day heroes are not required to be physically adept, but rather, heroes need to be authentically driven to overcoming oppression to fortify strength.
