Hepatitis B is an infection that causes inflammation of the liver. The liver helps to store energy, removes poisons and toxins, and helps you digest food. When the liver is not functioning properly, there can be significant damage that will affect the whole body. The causative organism is from the hepadnavirus, in which, humans are a susceptible host. The virus particles from the hepadnavirus make up the Hepatitis B virus. Hepatitis B virus is also commonly referred to as HBV. There are two different variations of the Hepatitis B virus, acute and chronic. Acute HBV is a short-term infection whereas the chronic virus is lifelong infection. Both types may have the same signs and symptoms; however vary with the complications and processes of treatment and prevention.

Due to extensive vaccination programs for infants, children and adults, along with safe needle using practices, the spread of the Hepatitis B virus has decreased dramatically. It is important that the preventative measures are always completed to keep the virus from spreading because it is easily transmitted. “An estimated 2 billion persons worldwide have been infected with HBV, and more than 350 million persons have chronic, lifelong infections.” (CDC, 2017). Hepatitis B is a DNA viral infection that causes damage and inflammation to the liver. It was first discovered in 1965 by Dr. Baruch Blumberg. The HBV virus is very contagious and is even thought to be the most serious form of viral hepatitis and the most common viral infection on Earth. “HBV is 100 times more infectious than HIV.” (Green, 2002, pg. 7) The virus can survive for about one week outside the body on a dry surface. According to Green (2002, pg. 7), “One in twenty Americans has been infected with the virus at some point in their lives.” Between the ages of 15-39 is when 75% of new HBV infections occur, according to Green (2002, pg.8).

This disease changes the structure of the liver and blood vessels that nurture it. It reduces the liver’s capability to produce proteins and process hormones, nutrients, medications, and poisons. Cirrhosis is an illness that gets worse over time and possibly can become life threatening. This serious illness is ranked as the ninth leading cause of death in the U.S. It is the third most common cause of death for adults between 45 and 65 years of age. It occurs in more than fifty percent of undernourished chronic alcoholics. Unfortunately it kills about 35,000 people per year. Those most at risk for contracting STDs are people who have unprotected sex—without using a condom, people who have multiple partners, and people whose sex partners are drug users who share needles.
