Research question/objectives
When I first proposed this study I wanted to know why are there a greater number of girls dropping out of a higher education than boys do. I realised that this was not a path breaking question but since I did not want to dwell into a path-breaking aspect in my first internship in this sphere I thought I would be a good idea to understand the obvious and then go ahead with newer ideas. I wanted to use this internship as a platform for my future projects that will be will women and development, if it is left only to my wishes. I am genuinely interested to work in this sector. In a way my generalised question helped me understand the larger picture better and also forced me to think in manner that was a little more specific.
I wanted to investigate if the question of the household head was just a mere reference point. This doubt was clarified because of the paper by Gangopadhyaya and Wadhwa. I have always believes that the gender bias within our society might prove a battle for the female headed household which would have direct impact on their next generation, namely, their children. Amongst the children I felt that a greater impact will be seen in the loves of girls than boys because mothers are more likely to seek the girl child’s help with domestic chores and the education of the girls could be side-lined because of economic reasons. I believe that there is a high chance of patriarchy to exist even within household run by women and that might put the future of their girl children in jeopardy.

There were a few girls who were mentioned during casual conversations that they require a little guidance with respect to the higher education which the organisation is helping them with. There are arrangements being made for a career guidance workshop for the respondents by the organisation.
Out of the 6 girls interviewed from a female headed household, 5 were pursuing graduation while one was still in class 12th. 5 of them wished wished to study further, most citing a possible chance to a post-graduation. One cited that it might prove impossible since she is required to take a job right after graduation. Three of the girls have stated they would wish to work along-side while they pursue their post-graduation to avoid economic problems. Of the total 6, 3 wished to pursue an M.Com, 1 an M.B.A while the 1 wanted to pursue a post-graduation.
These unofficial requirements for university become a one reason of increasing stress of the applicants. Students needs to concentrate on going to college during their high school years. Unfortunately, not only students get stress while applying to college, but they also get stress after they enroll into college. Due to expensive tuition bill, some of the students need to take student loan. Cook concludes by arguing that high schools should support their students not only enrolling into college, but also basic skills which can be used after college, and college admission processes are needed to be change.
Women who only served as housewives during the 18th centuries have been able to create a place for them in the society in the 21st century. For example, males are identified as the head of the household and the provider for the family. This concept affects society because women are told that they should be nurtures and should be dedicated to their children. This shows that women were told that they shouldn’t work and should instead focus on being a housewife. This results in the mother and children being dependent on the father. Men are told that they should provide financial support for the family. Also, men are the authority in the household because they discipline their children. Ridgeway says” Gender beliefs are a continual referent for people’s own behavior and sense of identity in the home, and because household tasks themselves carry a gendered connotation, the performance or non-performance of those tasks can be a symbolic gender display for the person “(135).So, gender beliefs effect on how we view gender in the household because it is based on expectations of gender roles. Moreover, gender in household affects household division because women spend more time in the household. For example, since males are the providers they are rarely at home. They are not able to help with household duties. The mother does all the housework in the household. Also .the mother spends her whole time attending to the children and doing chores. Education has been the hurdle keeping women from gaining equality in society, by separating them from their male counterparts. Women who sought higher education were considered, heathens and the most disgusting beings that would perish. Without education to empower them, women were stripped of their dignity and rights by their husbands and other men of the community. The struggle for women higher education is a battle that still has not reached its citadel.
In the past decade, research showed that in the process of education in some countries, girls do better than boys, this problem was called ‘a boy’s problem’. The Dutch Ministry of Education published the study which examines the boys’ and girls’ position in primary school based on previous studies (Driessen, Langen, 2013). As a matter of fact, this problem is not a new question, and there are many discussions about gender differences. An important part of the problem is that boys’ scores are far below those of girls. In all education, based on some researchers' opinions, involving spatial and mathematical reasoning, skills, boys always doing better than girls, but in the aspects of language application and writing, girls often do better than boys (Bonomo, 2010).
I chose India to provide a data. I would like to discus about male and female work opportunities, education differences, supports, and in politics. I am expecting to provide the negative and positive things about male and female difference in my native country. I choose this statistics because they matter in our daily life. The traditional view of gender roles differs where women are nurturing, home oriented and calm. On the other hand, men are seen as the opposite. Nevertheless, the modern view does not distinguish these differences because of the greater involvement of the father in the family. The differences do not lie among the genders but the perspective of the individuals in society, both genders can contribute to each other’s works regardless of what sex they fall under. The society, religious institute, and media play a greater role in shaping these gender roles.
Gender roles are extremely important to the functioning of families. The family is one of the most important institutions. It can be nurturing, empowering, and strong. Some families are still very traditional. The woman or mother of the family stays at home to take care of the children and household duties. The man or father figure goes to work so that he can provide for his family. Many people believe that this is the way that things should be. Gender determines the expectations for the family. Gender is defined as the scopes of genetic, physical, mental and behaviour characteristics pertaining to, and differentiating between, masculinity and feminity, meanwhile inequality is defined as in a situation where there is an unfair situation or treatment in which certain people have more privileges or better opportunities or chances than other people. Thus, from the definition stated gender inequality refers to unequal or unfair management, treatment, or perceptions of persons or individuals are based on their gender. In a parallel sense, gender inequality can be said as the world in which there was discrimination against anyone based on gender. In this introductory, the general understanding of gender inequalities will be discussed further into three significant factors that influence the allocation of housework between men and women. Household chores can be classified as cleaning, cooking and paying bills. Division of housework serves as an important element in the continuation of the function of a family and it requires contribution from both spouses (Tang, 2012). However, current society’s perception on housework is based on gender, so the three major factors that influence the division of household chores within the couples are education level, economic resources, and time availability (refer to Figure1 in Appendix 1).

Gender discrimination existed in greater amounts in the past than in today’s society. While the past tells us the story of women being of subordinate nature, always dependent on the men, being submissive to them and accepting men’s aggressive nature and living under their rule in the household, today’s society tells us the story of women’s empowerment and gender equity. However, we cannot say that gender equity exists in all household which brings us to the purpose of this research. The main aim of doing this research is to compare gender equality within the household in the past with that of the present and find out to what extent has gender equality been achieved in the house.
