Hell on Wheels accurate? Hell on wheels is a television series about the construction of the early railroad from the east to west coast. As with most T.V. it does not accurately depict the past, but one thing I want to find out in particular is, was prostitution really so open and acceptable during this time period? The first train to be completed in California would be in May, 1869. So if we look at the 1850’s to 60’s it’s safe to assume that this can reflect whether this glorification of sex was a reality of the 19th century. Prostitutes not only existed in big cities during this time, they thrived in newer territories or in rugged areas, such as the expansion of the intercontinental railroad. The book, City of Eros: New York City, Prostitution, and the Commercialization of Sex 1790-1920, written by Timothy J. Gilfoyle, explains the sexual transformation New York and its inhabitants experienced. Gilfoyle emphasizes the idea that sex had not been commercialized prior to this time. This new sex industry expanded all throughout New York City. Gilfoyle states that the public saw prostitution in a numerous ways; there were citizens who viewed it as a necessary urban evil and others as a moral disease. Many people thought that prostitution consisted of wretched women, who chose to sell themselves for the thrill of it, a common misconception. A handful of prostitutes became successful madams, acquiring mass amounts of wealth and power. With the increase in commercialized sex, there also was a dramatic increase in violence against women, leading to the creation of the pimp. Gilfoyle also writes about the transition that the male sexual psyche underwent in the 1900s, referred to as the “sporting man” culture. Prostitution’s prevalence in New York City extended from the brothels to other public spaces, such as museums. For some individuals, this sexual freedom resulted in the creation of guidebooks and pornographic literature. During the 1900s, prostitution also became heavily intertwined with law enforcement and its politics. With the visibility of sex exponentially increasing, some citizens resorted to vigilantism to combat it. The ideology of taking matters into one’s own hands led the social Reverend Charles Henry Parkhurst’s successful reform of prostitution.
In California, between 1850’s to the Chinese Exclusion Act, most of the Chinese women who came to San Francisco were either slaves or indentured. Due to the skewed gender role expectations in the nineteenth century American West, female prostitutes often experienced abusive masters, pitiful wages, and an overarching poor quality of life.

This artwork has an automatic drawing that looks random and adventurous. I can see that the two-dimensional of the tree trunk and branches which have the outline of a cylinder and rectangle. There are vertical, horizontal, diagonal lines used to emphasize in this drawing like, the curvy tree trunk and the diagonal branches that stick out of the tree. Also the thin short lines are displayed behind the big thick tree trunk to avoid attention and let us in-version that there are many more enormous tree nearby. The lines were used in the picture to create a tonal variation and simulate texture. “The curving road, the tree trunks and branches, and the choreographed forms of villager all sway to an integrated rhythm”, that focus our attention of how the artist utilized lines to create a freeform way which add excitement to the design. He also applied different colors to shimmer in flat shapes in order to make the landscape come more alive and the expressive feeling of the villagers. The shapes of the house and road have a smooth and rounded angle that appears to be distorted. I don’t see any three-dimensional form that was use in this painting, however, the artist tend to portray a different angles that allow the viewer to see certain things like the trees and curved road to stand out and grab the viewer attention.
