Karl was on the final lap, approaching Heartbreak Hill in the marathon race. His breathing was already rough and scraggy, the air escaping from his tired lungs in gasps and wheezes. Karl knew that Heartbreak Hill was his toughest challenge. If he could go over this hill, today he would be the winner in the Boston Marathon. Approaching the ascent, Karl summoned up all the energy he could and began to climb the hill and finish this final challenge. He so desperately wanted to win the marathon today. He was surprised to see, that the runner behind him, was now only inches away, and that this runner was no other then ...

After that the same problems encountered earlier surfaced and contractors and labor petered out. Today all activity at the plot is almost non-existent. Wait, that’s not exactly true, tumble-weeds now blow around on the site in the wind, hustling here and there, like children in a park, whilst the desert continues victoriously to reclaim the land that it had lost so abruptly to human civilization.

Carol now clearly understands, why those cranes reminded her of praying-mantises. Just like that abhorable creature that cannibalizes its lover, so also does this country do the same to the people who love it and adopt it as a replacement for their homeland.
