More than half of the population is Hispanic of origin. 26.2% of individuals less than 65 years have no health insurance and 15.9% persons in poverty. Our community has a higher rate of individuals with no health insurance less than 65 years when I compared the statistics from our neighbor communities. Although the poverty rate of our community is lower than Maywood Park, I believe this issue needs to be addressed to improve access to health care and increase community-based resources. Out of 1,364 communities in Illinois, Melrose Park is ranked number 19 in Average Family size which is 4.11. By becoming healthier as a society, the cost of healthcare decreases for the nation. Healthy People 2020 aims to improve population health by using electronic health to enhance communication strategies (Healthy People 2020, 2015). The nation’s government and health care officials acknowledge the impact that communication, information, and technology have on the population’s everyday life. Patient education stems from teaching basic health practices and informing patients of health literacy. In order to accomplish the various types of patient education there are many different practices that can be used to do so. The simplest forms of patient education are examples such as patient teaching with health screenings. During health screenings a doctor and/or nurse will assess patients and intervene with treatment if needed. In the event of treatment the healthcare provider will use patient education to teach the patient of the current health condition and practices to help with the patient’s current health condition. It is suggested that the healthcare provider must first be able to identify the patient’s health literacy before they can begin educating a patient (Eadie, 2014). If the patient has no current health issues a nurse or healthcare provider can then use patient education to help a patient maintain a healthy lifestyle. Self-screenings, daily exercise, and nutritional diets are easy practices that a nurse can encourage to help sustain a healthy life for a patient. Along with face-to-face patient education there has been a significant advancement in patient education through health campaigns. According to Eadie (2014) , Healthy People 2020 is a health campaign set aside by the government as a form of patient education in efforts decrease health issues and improve patient
One health is a concept of bringing together human, animal, and environmental health. That is a further step of the control of infectious disease. Over three decades, epidemic of new infectious diseases has occurred more often. Many unknown diseases such as Lyme disease, Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, Nipah virus disease, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) were not isolated before 1982. Moreover, growth rate of antibiotic resistance and re-emerging infectious diseases such as rabies and food-borne diseases are occurring nowadays. Where do these diseases come from? How can they be detected early? The answers are in the One Health which is a prevention strategy. In this report, it will be highlighted a brief explanation
Public health in the United States in the early 1900s focused on improving sanitation, controlling infectious diseases, assuring the safety of the food and water supply, and providing immunizations to children with a workforce composed mostly of physicians, nurses, and biological scientists (Brandt and Gardner, 2000; Garrett, 2000; Mullan, 2000). Today’s public health challenges are much broader. Healthy People 2010 lays out a broad agenda for public health efforts aimed at increasing health-related quality of life and eliminating health disparities (U.S. DHHS, 2000). Koplan and Fleming (2000) outline 10 challenges for public health that include cleaning up the environment, eliminating health disparities, wisely using new scientific knowledge and technology, attending to children’s physical and emotional development, and aging healthily. The solutions will require multi-faceted public health policies, with an ecological approach. This will require well-educated interdisciplinary group of public health professionals whose focus is population health. A specialized set of professionals who also understand that successful interventions require understanding not only of the effects of biology and behavior, but also the social, environmental, and economic contexts within which populations
