Healthy People 2020 is a health promotion program that is aimed at improving the health, wellness and longevity of the nation by the year 2020. This paper will focus on the Healthy People 2020 goals, how they will impact the families of those suffering with mental health disorders and those at risk for injury due to violence. It will further discuss the potential barriers that exist between promoting these goals and the interventions nurses can utilize to achieve them. Healthy People 2020 Goals It is very important for Americans to be proactive with their health and pursue a healthy lifestyle. Americans suffer from many health issues such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, liver disease, mental disorders and addiction. What is important to understand is that many of these diseases are preventative or the onset can be delayed and health risks reduced by utilizing preventative services. Healthy People 2020 is a national health promotion that focuses on helping individuals improve their health and increase longevity by improving infrastructure, expanding preventative service and promoting education and awareness. Although we are all human, our differences in ethnicity and race can put us at higher risk for different illnesses and conditions. For instance, “Hispanic Americans have been variously reported to have higher rates of obesity, elevated blood pressure, elevated triglycerides, dyslipidemia, and diabetes” (Allison et al., 2008, p. 962). Healthy People 2020 can help decrease the health care disparities among Americans. In some cases we are required to place a patient in four point restraints until they are able to calm down and are no longer a threat to others. According to U.S Department of Health and Human Services the main goal of these programs is to “Increase the quality, availability, and effectiveness of educational and community-based programs designed to prevent disease and injury, improve health, and enhance quality of life.” (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2011). This particular goal of Healthy People 2020 focuses on increasing the number educational and community based programs to increase awareness about disease prevention and health among every individual of the society. It focuses on educating them on various topics including chronic diseases, substance abuse, prevention of injury and violence to encourage and enhance health. It emphasizes on increasing the quantity and quality of such programs so that a larger population could benefit from the program and gain effective knowledge to achieve a healthy life.
