Health promotion is a topic that is often discussed, but more often is rushed thru during a clinical appointment. Why? Shouldn’t medical professionals focus more of proactive care instead of reactive? Time is often to blame due to the limited number of medical providers that are required to cover a community. Time allotted to medical providers per appointment might only be 15 to 20 minutes. That doesn’t allow enough time for questions or guidance to be given to the patient to help improve their overall health. Now compare those individuals who get little information at the medical office to those who rarely go see the doctor. These people are missing out on vital medical information that can help them reduce their chances of developing further …show more content…
So what would be a better alternative for this solution? Health wellness fairs would be idyllic to incorporate in the community so that everyone can have the opportunity to speak to professionals and learn more about what healthy living should be like. As mention earlier, time seems to be a factor on why health professionals do not properly educate their patients on their general health. Our healthcare system is mainly relying on reactive care than health promotion. Typically, people only go to the doctors if they have a medical issue that needs to be resolved, not on what are the best ways of lowering cholesterol. So health fairs would be the superlative option to assist in educating the public on overall wellness and health education. Professionals know have a forum to put out information in a manner that people can …show more content…
There are numerous sources that can be called upon. There are companies whose sole purpose is to provide health promotion services thru health events. Also rounding up local medical offices and health insurance companies can be another alternative. Only qualified organizers and screeners should be utilized to avoid incorrect information from being distributed to the public. Next, what services should be offered? How in-depth should the event? This is important due to costs. These fairs shouldn’t be expensive to setup but need to provide adequate services to people such as blood pressure monitoring and nutritional
The Denver March Pow Wow event was fun, educational and interesting. The Pow Wow consisted of many diverse native american tribes from all over the United States, who have come to perform cultural dances, and educate others about their beliefs. The Pow Wow had many booths on the outside that sold many different but relevant goods, such as: natural medicines, jewelry, animal skin, instruments, art and music. I found it fascinating that some native americans still lived in their tribes within their home village on the reservation. Their culture is very different and many different social determinants of health affect their population. Their ethnocentric beliefs are so different compared to the western culture, not only in natural medicine and
Following that, “Plan Health Education/Promotion” is the second responsibility that health educators must follow—Furthermore, educators must “Involve Priority Populations and Other Stakeholders in the Planning Process”(NCHEC, n.d., p. 2). Hi folks, thanks for the response to my previous blog. However, my slothful ways have caught up to me and I need to complete this blog that’s become a few weeks overdue for the Minnesota State Fair. Although, I enjoyed my time at the Minnesota State Fair, although being worn down and tired of hordes of people, I decided not to travel to the Renaissance Fair the following day. However, The Minnesota State Fair was delightful and was able to partake in the music, the culture, and the delicious food. Although my dental regimen was not on par for the toothache that started after eating those sweet delectable cookies. I will explain later in the blog, certainly read further on a few tips for the 2016 Minnesota State Fair.

Currently, I am a Practice Quality Support Coordinator and one of my roles is assisting practices in locating and outreaching to patients that need preventative services performed, such as a mammogram, colonoscopy, or follow up for patients with high blood pressure. By ensuring patients acquire these services, we can detect health conditions earlier, prevent trips to the emergency room, save money, and most importantly save lives. I am passionate about focusing on preventative care and encouraging a healthy lifestyle to each one of my patients. I have personally seen the power of exercise and a healthy diet in my brother’s life. Playing football and other forms of exercise has stabilized his blood sugars and led to a reduction in the amount of insulin he needs. I want to be involved in the education for newly diagnosed patients, as well as the management of their disease in everyday life.

Improving health is in the best interest of everyone, including non health professionals. Health mangers need to be constantly looking for ways to improve access to health, the quality of the care, and cost containment.
Often in practice, we as nurses deal with a variety of diseases and treatments and often have to react to the illness that the patient presents with upon our interaction. While this is an essential piece of our practice, we also have a duty to our patients to be proactive in preventing specific health-related consequences based on their risk factors and to promote their health and well being. Health promotion as it relates to nursing is about us empowering our patients to increase their control over their lives and well beings and includes: focusing on their health not just illness, empowering our patients, recognizing that health involves many dimensions and is also effected by factors outside of their control (Whitehead et al. 2008)..

Health is considered a complete wellness of a body including physical, mental and social well-being and Holistic Health is considered a wellness of a whole body including mind, body and spirit. According to American Holistic Medicine Association “Holistic medicine is the art and science of healing that addresses the whole person – body, mind and spirit” (Wollumbin, page 3). Holistic Health is an alternate way to treat, prevent, and wellness of an illness and achieves the best possible level of health. It focuses on the whole body rather than just symptoms or diseases. It is an approach to heal the physical, psychological, environmental, spiritual, nutritional health of one’s being. For each individual, the definition of holistic health is different and in simple words it is an alternate way of treatment where physical, mental, emotional and spiritual works equally together to attain a health. In western medicine, standard treatment is given with drugs or surgery according to symptoms or diseases or injuries where a doctor or a physician determines the ways of treatment and the patient has to follow the recommendations. Whereas, holistic health is a complete opposite way to treat the illness where patients cooperate in their illnesses, take the responsibility of their treatments, make their own decision for own level of well-being and thoroughly participate in their health care plan.
