Throughout the health course, topics such as Nutrition, Desirable Weight, eating disorders, drugs and Alcohol help us comprehend what is best for one’s body. In our Nutrition lesson, we learned about the Food Groups and Food Plate. A healthy diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat-free or low fat milk and milk products. This includes meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts. There are five main food groups that are a central component to help make healthy food choices. The fruit group encompasses a wide range of fresh fruit and fruit products, including dried, frozen and canned, and 100 percent fruit juice. Fruits can be whole, cut-up, or pureed. Commonly eaten fruits are apples, bananas, oranges, grapes etc. Grain is any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain product. Examples of grain products are bread, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereal, tortillas, and grits. The grain group is comprised of two subgroups: whole grain and refined grains. Whole grain products contain the entire grain kernel; the bran and germ some of which include whole-wheat flour bulgur (cracked wheat), oatmeal, cornmeal, and brown rice. On the other hand, refined grains have been milled, a process that removes the bran and germ. This is done to give grains a finer texture, but also removes dietary fiber, iron and many B vitamins. Examples are not limited to white flour, degermed cornmeal, white bread and white rice. The vegetable food group includes an array of fresh vegetables and vegetable products, including frozen, canned, fresh, dried/ dehydrated, as well as 100 percent vegetable juice. The main group is divided into subgroups: dark green vegetables including broccoli, kale, and collard greens. Other stimulants are cocaine; they are highly addictive; it is white powder extracted from the leaves of a coca plant. This can lead to depression, fatigue, paranoia, and cardiac problems. Crack is a more dangerous form of cocaine; it reaches the brain in seconds after being smoked. It causes heart rate and blood reassure to soar to dangerous levels; death may be a result from cardiac or respiratory failure. Hallucinogens makes one feel invincible, can cause increase in heart and respiratory rates, using these drugs can cause a coma. Lastly opiates, when used the way they are intended they are effective pain relievers, but abusing opiates causes dull senses, causes drowsiness, constipation, slow and shallow breathing, comas and deaths. Overall, the health course was exciting and I learned so much from it.
