It is important that peers communicate effectively with one another in the health care environment. Parvis (2001) discusses the importance of effective communication practices that promote peer-to-peer collaboration among colleagues, and advocates open sharing of thoughts, ideas. The willingness to actively participate in events that encourage open discussions is equally important. The definition of public speaking (as cited in the American Heritage College Dictionary) is “the expression of oneself..,” or “the state of being connected, one with another.” Public speech should be detailed, organized, anticipated, and spoken loudly for the receiver to get the point. More importantly, both group and mass communication falls in the category of verbal and nonverbal. Twenty five percent or one-fourth of the communicated message is verbal, and the rest (75 percent) is nonverbal. This includes factors of communication such as facial expression, postures, gestures, and voice tone.
Sinickas (2007) suggests that to address communication breakdowns effectively, we must understand that communication is both top-down and horizontal through an organization. Cross-departmental communication should be the responsibility of operational management to help ensure information is channeled effectively and efficiently to all involved parties. Effective communication can be both costly, and save an organization hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in revenue yearly. The best approach is to first identify communication barriers interdepartmentally, and take an operational management style approach to help improve those bottlenecks in the delivery of the communication from across all departments.

This year I am most excited about learning how to better communicate with children and being able to see how communication changes depending on their stage of development. I’m excited to learn how to accurately take blood pressure and other vital signs like pulse and respiration. As well as, being able to identify any values that are abnormal. I am also eager to learn how to appropriately express these abnormal finds to my young patients without igniting fear.
In healthcare one of the major obstacles employees attempt to overcome is the communication gap. The outpatient clinics in particular find it challenging to keep in contact with the hospital. In the healthcare market to have success you must have communication. Romano observed that hospitals are branching out; outpatient setting offer lucrative services that are rendered in a well-situated environment (2006). The outpatient sector is where the profit is made; this is clearly the way of the future. If prospective clinics are to fulfill patient and employees needs, a communication policy must be put into practice. By employing a communication strategy employees will be more productive, more informed, and administration could expect to see enhanced customer service.
Effective communication between patient and clinician is an important aspect to patient care. Proper communication has a direct positive impact on patient care and adversely poor communication has a direct negative impact on patient care. I will define the seven principles of patient-clinician communication and how I apply these communications with my patients. I will also describe the three methods currently being used to improve interdisciplinary communication and the one method that my area of practice currently uses. Then, I will explain the ethical principles that can be applied to issues in patient-clinician communication. And Lastly, the importance of ethics in communication and how patient safety is influenced by good or bad team communication.
Within an organization one of the key tools that they use is that of: communication. Communication is a primary key to any organization and without it there is no cohesion, no leadership, and no functionality. As communication begins to diminish, so does the organization – as one article puts it: “These new economic…. imperatives have significantly contributed to the demise of the old classic command-and-control bureaucracy…” (Tiernan et al, 2002, 47-48). From what this article states, the lack of communication has led to a semi-collapse of the mechanistic structure of an organization. There are different forms and reason people communicate in a health and social care environment. Methods of communication used in social care settings range from verbal and non-verbal communication and as such, communication is the exchange of information between people in an organisation (BTEC, 2010). Pearson Education Limited identified the different reasons people communicate which are; to express needs; to share ideas and information; to reassure; to express feelings and/or concerns; to build relationships; socialise; to persuade, argue and inform; to compliment and gain attention; to learn, teach and educate; to ask questions and to share experiences (2013). Hence, Communication is about making contact with others, we communicate to understand and to be understood. Thus, it involves
“Communication is the heart of nursing… your ability to use your growing knowledge and yourself as an instrument of care and caring and compassion” (Koerner, 2010, as cited in Balzer-Riley, 2012, p. 2). The knowledge base which Koerner is referring to includes important concepts such as communication, assertiveness, responsibility and caring (Balzer-Riley, 2012). Furthermore, communication is complex. It includes communication with patients, patient families, doctors, co-workers, nurse managers and many others. Due to those concepts and the variety of people involved, barriers and issues are present. Knowing how to communicate efficiently can be difficult.
Communication encompasses a wide range of processes such as the exchange of information, listening, posing of questions (Fleischer et al., 2009) or use of body language. In a healthcare environment where there are constant interactions among nurses, doctors, patients and other health professionals, professional and effective communication is important in ensuring high quality healthcare standards and meeting the individual needs of patients.
Communication is defined by the American Nurses Association (2013) as reflection in the competencies that embrace effectively communication information and ideas in writing and verbally as well as expressing ideas clearly and concisely and inspiring others. Communication is imperative to human interaction for without it, people cannot relate to those around them, make their needs and concerns known, or make sense of what is happening to them (Casey 2011). Communication in nursing occurs everyday and it plays a crucial role in the management of patients and the quality of care delivered. Because communication occurs with both verbal and non-verbal signals, nurses need to be aware of not just thoughts, opinions, and ideas, but also of feelings, emotions, and non-verbal cues such as facial expressions and touch. Nurses who communicate effectively are better to able to collect assessment data, initiate interventions, evaluate outcome of interventions, initiate change that promotes health, and prevent legal problems associated with nursing practices (Berman et al, 2008, p. 460). Nurses need to be aware of good communication skills and what barriers come along with communication. Communication barriers include distractions, inadequate knowledge, stress, poor planning, differences in perception, emotions, and personality (Berman et al, 2008, p. 471). Good communication includes establishing a clear purpose, actively listening, being compassionate, telling the truth, being flexible, and committing to resolution (Berman et al, 2008, p. 474). Communication is vital to ensure optimal patient care and safety.

The general communication strategies involve conversation and elaboration, active listening, mutual understanding, and allowing patients to share their thoughts and feelings. One of the most critical aspects of the general communication strategies is active listening and acknowledging patients’ feelings and thoughts. This strategy usually occurs in a social or structured environment where nurses are able to know patients as unique individuals. The strategy also involves the use of both verbal and non-verbal communication ways.
Doctor Patient Communication The main purpose of the medical interview is to collect historical information that can be used to make a diagnosis of the disease and to understand the patient’s problem. Henderson, 11 This is the beginning of the physician – patient relationship. The interview generally begins by the doctor greeting the patient, introducing himself/herself, and defining his/her professional role. Common courtesy dictates that the physician learns the patient’s name and refers to them with the proper title.

Thus, it is important to understand the health communication’s overview, planning processes, techniques, and methods that affect and influence healthcare policy and political initiatives.
The effectiveness of one’s communication can significantly impact one’s ability to initiate, develop, and maintain personal, therapeutic, and interprofessional relationships. According to Casey and Wallis, “Without it, people cannot relate to those around them, make their needs and concerns known or make sense of what is happening to them,” (2011, p.35).
In our growing, diverse society it’s very important to have diverse communication skills. The reason for this is because it brings richness in our society. Effective communication helps us better understand a person or situation and enables us to resolve differences, build trust and respect, and create environments where creative ideas, problem solving, affection, and caring can flourish (Robinson, Lawrence, and Jeanne Segal). It helps our society flourish. Communication is the process of understanding information through the transmittal of words, actions, hidden messages, signals or thoughts. Communicating in a world of diversity may require more than just a transmittal of words. Communication sometimes require more than one process depending on who you are communicating to. Communicating in a world of diversity has many benefits. Communication is split into two parts which is listening and speaking. Speaking as well as listening goes hand in hand with each other. Speaking and listening is verbal and nonverbal. Listening is one of the most important aspects of effective communication (Robinson, Lawrence, and Jeanne Segal). It’s not always what is being said but rather what is being done. Non-verbal communication is a big part in communication also. Both the talker and listener are participating in non-verbal communication.
