“I need a job.” How many times have I heard that one – I’ve heard it a million times. Living in a modern society based on a green piece of paper, I am burdened, and feel it maybe even impossible to survive without one. Without money, I wouldn’t have cars, clothes, livelihood or maybe even my health. Today it is simple, to luxuriate in finer things you need money, and to get money, I need a job.
“I hate my job.” How many times have I heard that one? A million and one. It seems nobody today is content with his or her job. So why do it? Because I have to work; hence, I don’t have an option. I feel that most people, like myself, find their place of work rather uncomfortable; however, I still need to keep my job.
For the last two summers, I worked a job, which at first I thought was ideal. I was a PC/LAN Coordinator at Chippenham Hospital. “How neat,” I thought, “I love to work with computers, and they are paying me eight dollars an hour!” I even had and office and everything. Starting out there was so intoxicating; I was able to practice my computer networking expertise and it almost seemed like it wasn’t any work at all. Soon things became repetitive, I started getting bored, and I was getting instructed to do more new tasks every day. I felt dissatisfied with the menial tasks I was given, and, although the paycheck was generous, I felt frustrated at the end of each week. I felt my boss was nice to me, but this was just not a job that stimulated my interests. The amount of deskwork was boring, and I enjoy being around people and moving to different locations during the workday.
Soon enough I hated my great job! I made the decision an office was definitely not the vocation for me. It even got to the point where I would feel apprehensive about coming into work every day, because I knew I would be doing the exact same thing in the exact same place. Then I set out a goal in my life: I will not anguish myself with a job with which I am not happy. I believe this objective is important - if I am going to a workplace every day that I hate, then I need to find a way to find another occupation that interests me.
Day after day, I work at Home Depot. I’ve worked at Home Depot for 6 months. My position there is a cashier. A few months have gone by and all I do is show up and do my job as a cashier. The cashiers have someone who runs the front end along with every register in the store, and that person is a head ashier. After what I see the head cashiers go through, I would never want to be a head cashier for the rest of my life.
For this reason, I spent years at jobs that, although, they were not bad and I performed them well,
I had spent 4 of those 6 years hating to get up in the mornings to go to work. That was an extremely difficult time in my life. I grew up being told never to quit a job until you have another one, but I’m a firm believer that being unhappy in your job affects everything else around you. A normal work day is 8 hours 5 days a week. That means most people could spend more time at work than at home. It’s important to be happy and satisfied with what you’re spending so much of your time away from your family doing. After this experience I have approached looking for positions differently. What happens when a worker is not being fulfilled in his or her perspective job? Everyone has had or will have a job. Whether he or she is a farmer, CEO, or burger flipper; regardless these are jobs. Additionally, throughout these jobs people have experiences, some good, and some bad. Some will hate their jobs and dread going to work when they wake up, while other will flourish at their jobs and gain a sense of fulfillment. Someone can come to hate a job because of a high workload, low salary, or long hours, while the love of a job comes from a sense of fulfillment by doing what he or she loves or having high salary and low workloads. In some cases, because employees are in the job for just the money and not personal gain they become dissatisfied more easily than someone who goes into a job looking for personal improvement or passion for the job.
Maybe you are one of those people who are pretty successful on their chosen fields, yet still feel unfulfilled. Lots of people are coming into their daily jobs without a sense of self and are unhappy. Somehow deep inside you you are dying to leave the career that feeds you.
Our place of work is home away from home, since we spend the majority of our day at work. Now, being in an environment where we spend so much time, effort and energy we should experience some kind of fulfillment. We should leave work each daily feeling fulfilled. According to the Simon Sinek video, “feeling of fulfillment comes from doing something for another. It also comes from the excursion of time and energy for someone else” (Sinek, 2012). In order to have a feeling of fulfillment we need to love our jobs and we need to enjoy what we are doing. How we feel about our jobs will affect us in our day-to-day life and also the people that we come into contact with. For example, being in the health care industry, it is a great feeling of fulfillment because after each day I know that I have impacted and help someone else.
Business Insider journalist, Alyson Shontell states in her article “80% Hate Their Jobs--But Should You Choose a Passion or a Paycheck?”, “80% according to Deloitte’s Shift Index survey--are dissatisfied with their jobs” which leaves a greatly negative impression on their work (Shontell). Hypothetically speaking, if someone didn’t enjoy their job, it is most likely they would not put their full effort and commitment into the work they were doing, therefore leaving it incomplete and poorly executed. If an artist were to work a ‘boring’ desk job, the said artist’s work would not benefit them or their employer because the work would not be at the level of completion needed. The author Curt Rosengren discusses the positive aspects of working a job one loves in his article “How Loving Your Job Helps You Succeed” when he writes “Doing work you love is energizing. It creates a virtuous circle. You do the work and that energizes you, which in turn means that you have more energy to put into doing the work...When bumps, bruises, or roadblocks come in pursuit of something you love, it’s exponentially easier to blow through them than when you are experiencing them in pursuit of something that doesn’t really energize you.” (Rosengren). Reflecting back on my career, I honestly couldn’t be more proud of myself at this point. I grew up in a lower income community with a blue collar family. Most people graduate from my High School and enter into the workforce, passing on college or trade schools. Most of these jobs are manufacturing or labor intensive positions. I however, had the fortune of attending college right out of High School on an athletic scholarship. Although I found out quickly that I was not ready to take on the responsibility of a student-athlete. Therefore, after just one year of college, I dropped out. Quickly realizing I needed to make money and provide for myself, I began working for a lawn care company. Working in lawn care was draining both physically and mentally. Physical labor 50+ hours a week takes its toll on your body. After work you don’t want to do anything but rest. You don’t have a lot of free time and you find yourself becoming burnt out really fast. Mentally you question yourself every day. Questions like, “why am I doing this” or “there has to be another way”. You feel worthless at times. After a year or so of doing lawn care, I chose to go back to school part-time, taking a class or two at a time. I still had to work in lawn care in order to pay the bills but I had a goal in mind, a goal to finish what I started. I always knew I wanted to work in a professional environment. After 4 years of working and taking courses, I decided I needed to change my environment. I was surrounded by the same people, people that weren’t contributing to my goal of becoming successful. I quit my first job after only six months. Most people hate their first job, as they tend to be low pay with menial tasks, working with people they did not like. I wished that I could have said the same thing, would have loved to be like everyone else, but I was not. I was motivated to get the job, for the money, respect and as my father told me before getting it; I would gain a work ethic to follow me around for the rest of my life.
