FEAR: Enjoyment Within Haunted Houses Human beings are diverse in what they like, dislike, and share with each other. As reality has shown human beings have emotions that either tell one to laugh or run away. Emotions are not usually controlled and when one has an opposite reaction to the emotion present it creates a question about why. Fear, for instance, is an emotion that usually elicits a fight or flight response. When fear elicits enjoyment, something deeper about our emotions are at work. The enjoyment of fear is also a topic with little information. If you research this you find a lot of qualitative information, but hardly any quantitative research. The two choices for haunted houses are The Haunted Hotel and The Morgue. I plan to sit some and walk some, possibly even getting in line for the attraction to observe the individuals who choose to come out those nights to be terrified. I plan to observe emotions such as fear, happiness, and anxiety that may be different between male and female. I also plan to observe social cohesion or the lack thereof. The interesting thing for me to observe is the conversations going on before entering the attraction and afterwards. From research it has been shown that before thrilling activities we tend to have to talk ourselves up to doing it (Legrand). This allows us to take the thrill and make it rewarding (Katrina). My chosen sites will help me understand fear because those attractions that try to scare individuals in a way that is not pushing people beyond what they can handle. They create people’s fears to play on them to give them a good experience. These attractions make a ton of money every year for just one month. They are the best choice to explore what people are scared of as well as how they react in such situations. Yes, they will be scared, but in the end they enjoy it. This is the only way to truly get both
