In our society, Twitter has become a prevalent force. Twitter plays a very important role in many people’s lives. There are many hashtags that people are creating based on social issues. For example, #YesAllWomen, #JeSuisCharlie, #BlackLivesMatter, and #IllRideWithYou. However, in this essay I will focus on #BringBackOurGirls. In Nigeria, 276 schoolgirls were kidnapped from the village of Chibok by the Islamic terrorist group, Boko Haram. The #BringBackOurGirls hashtag is a campaign formed on Twitter to raise awareness of this issue and to help find the missing girls. I choose to write about this hashtag because it is related to young girls like me and I want to share information about this with my class. In fact, social media has started a worldwide movement towards this issue with the use of the hashtag, #BringBackOurGirls. Many people are tweeting positive and forceful messages using this hashtag to make a change. This shows that everyone is standing in solidarity with the girls who got kidnapped. Moreover, social media has changed our perception of news. For example, nowadays there are very few people getting news from newspapers and television. More of the news comes from social media websites like Twitter. However, many years ago the original form of news we used to get was from newspaper articles. In fact, newspaper articles are more reliable than Twitter because on Twitter the facts can be changed and they aren’t filtered. Even though Twitter is unreliable, I still believe that social media has changed our society to be a better place because people are able to join together and express their voice to make a change. For example, the hashtag, #BringBackOurGirls received a huge worldwide response and support. This campaign will give the parents of the Chibok girls hope and courage until their daughters return. Furthermore, a question centered on this issue that I will pose to the class is, do you believe that the worldwide movement with the use of the hashtag, #BringBackOurGirls is effective in helping to find the Chibok girls? My answer to this question would be yes because it has reached people in power, like Michelle Obama. Hopefully, these people will take immediate action to find these girls. However, I believe that this issue is becoming forgotten. Not many people are using this hashtag to talk about the issue and to remind others about it as well. Another question centered on this issue that I will pose to the class is, why do you think the hashtag, #BringBackOurGirls represent an issue important to our society?
