The Harsh Effects of Today’s Running Shoes
It is no secret that running is becoming a growing hobby among people in the United States. Most people are aware that running has many benefits ranging from reduction of cardiovascular disease, boosting of the immune system, and reduction of everyday stresses. Running for most Americans has never been a “just for fun” activity until its big revival back in the 1970’s, which brought the design of today’s modern running shoe. Americans interested in running often face the big question of which shoes to purchase. However, many people aren’t aware of the dangers of running shoes, if any exist (Lieberman 65). Now is the time for Americans and future generations to be aware of the potential dangers of wearing running shoes. Now is the time to form the future of running. …show more content…

If ignored, PFPS can lead to osteoarthritis in Americans who choose to run with shoes (Benca 347-348). For people who are new to osteoarthritis, scholar Pu Wang describes the symptoms of osteoarthritis as, “Joint pain, swelling, stiffness, deformation and loss of functions in middle-aged and the elderly” (Wang, “Effects of Whole”). Notice that the symptoms of osteoarthritis are described for the middle-aged and elderly Americans. In the event that running form is not corrected, Americans of any age who run can suffer from osteoarthritis, because of PFPS caused by running shoes. Other injuries caused by wearing running shoes include, Achilles Tendonitis, Plantar Fasciitis or (foot irritation), Shin Splints, Iiiotibial Band Syndrome, and Stress Fractures (Benca 347-348). Although none of these injuries are life threatening, in the event that cortisone shots and splints fail, serious cases could leave runners who ignore pain symptoms on the operation
