While many people embrace change and technology, many other people are big opponents of having such technology brought into our classrooms. Those who oppose education entering into a technological world with the iPad believe there could be damage to the students’ health, such as internet addiction, depression, or vision problems. Those opponents also believe that such a device is too pervasive and this younger generation is simply a tablet-carrying, smart-phone obsessed, technologically dependent world. They believe that our students would receive much benefit from less exposure to devices, not more (Harlan, 2012).
Some of these same opponents make us aware that there are other limitations to having devices such as the iPad in the classroom. One limitation is the cost. Those who argue about the cost make a reasonable argument. A device alone could be anywhere from 200-500 dollars. This cost is before even considering the cost of apps or accessories that are needed to get the best use in the classroom. Some may argue that children can not learn information like they do from a textbook. There is also the issue that some people may believe that reading ability may decrease because student wouldn’t be reading to learn any longer. In a study done by the Department of Education, it was found that if we incorporate such technology in the classroom, it does not influence the amount of learning that takes place in the classroom, but it did increase the level of engagement of the students (Means, Toyama, Murphy, Bakia & Jones, 2010). In today’s world, technology has become a big part of everyone’s lives. Technology is becoming faster and better every day. Technology is able to help us in transportation, communication, information, learning, etc. Now technology is starting to be incorporated in school education. Through examining price, capacity vs. weight, and information/skills taught, it is evident that tablets are slowly becoming superior to textbooks.
Today’s world is constantly evolving and technological advances are surfacing it seems like every few weeks. Apple has produced the country’s most popular devices and the question has arose whether or not iPads are effective in the classroom. This research project will thoroughly entail the pros of implementing an iPad in the learning environment. As for my personal take on the debate, I side with modernizing education in order to keep up with technology and to preserve the student’s enjoyable learning environment.

An important tool for schools to acknowledge and pursue the benefits of is the iPad. Today’s society functions in the Era of Technology. Every day advancements are made in standards of living and expansions are made to our knowledge bases thanks to this high-tech living. More and more, children are exposed to these advancements and technologies. They are being born into the Technological Generation, thus they should take advantage of the equipment they will grow up with. The iPad would provide perks across the board for both students and educators. By providing iPads for children in school, teachers and students will benefit from the educational, environmental, economical, and health advantages.
In conclusion, iPads are detrimental to young children's social skills; cause harm to balance, posture, muscle development and fine motor skills; are liable to cause an addiction in younger children; and slow down the ability to process words and sounds as well as limiting vocabulary. These reasons are concrete proof that children up to the age of seven should not be using devices in a one-on-one environment for the six hours daily that they are at school. As a country, do we want to have our younger generation being dependent on their smartphones, tablets, and internet; or do we want strong leaders who can think for themselves? Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).

The use of tablets in grades K-12 have several positive and negative aspects of which these include: Cost of materials, policies on tablets, the aging of textbooks and electronic devices, the pros and cons of both the tablet and textbook, the impact on students that the tablet will give, the input from experienced faculty, and the health issues regarding the usage of the digital textbook. These are all factors as to whether America’s schools will transfer over to such devices. As technology has advanced, so has education, which is driving essential changes in how we work, live, and learn.
Should they have iPads, tablets, and nooks in the classroom? Are they too young? Will they break them? Are they educationally appropriate? These are a few of the questions and answers that teachers and educators want in order to have their children/students’ progress in the twenty-first century classroom. In California it is becoming popularized, “In September, the Los Angeles Unified School District began carrying out a $50 million plan to equip 30,000 students in 47 schools from kindergarten through 12th grade with an iPad. Giving kid’s iPads sounds like installing candy machines on every desk, or worse, Xboxes. The educators naturally disagree. They spent $678 per iPad, loading them up with software from the Pearson (PSO) educational group and locking them down so that students couldn’t wander around the Internet unchaperoned.”(Bloomberg, 2014)
As more people began to access the Internet through smart phones and tablets rather than laptops and computers, it is not a surprise that they would also want to transform the American education system by bringing tablets into classrooms. In fact, a few schools around the country have already replaced textbooks with tablets and have seen improvements in students’ standardized test scores. Using tablets instead of textbooks is not only convenient and helpful, but it can also reduce the amount of paper wastes in school. However, it is not a good idea to completely transform textbooks with tablets with the current technology, for it can not only be damaging to the environment and costly to set up, but also might not be effective in improving K-12 education in the long run.
Technology has rapidly changed over the years and has expanded our infrastructure greatly. In particular, as technology advances the education system adapts to the many changes. The world of technology brings about many new improvements and shows no sign of slowing down. Many people spend their day to day lives utilizing the great aspects of technology doing almost anything imaginable. Through technology teachers and students can connect and expound upon the many fields of education. Technology is an ever growing aid in education that has increased awareness, communication, and accessibility. How is technology shaping education?
