Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad The Underground Railroad was a slave escape root that slaves used to get from the south to the north to free states. There were many conductors on the railroad. One of the most famous conductors that worked on the railroad was Harriet Tubman. She was born 1820 and lived to 1913. Nobody officially knows Harriet Tubmans official birthdate. She was an abolitionist and was born into slavery. She escaped in 1849 and used the railroad to get to Philadelphia. She returned to the south over a dozen times and helped over 300 slaves escape. She also helped her brother, parents, and friends escape as she returned to the south. She spoke on the anti-slavery lecture. Harriet Tubman attached herself to union forces. She also helped in the freeing of more than 700 slaves. During the days of slavery abolitionists were very unpopular people at the time of slavery.
