Harper Lee, formerly known as Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926 in the small town of Monroeville, Alabama. Lee grew up on a farm in Monroeville with four older sisters, her father, and mother. Lee’s father was a lawyer and was a part of the Alabama State Legislature while owning parts of the local newspaper. Lee’s mother on the other hand was not so fortunate; she suffered from a mental illness (bipolar disorder), making it almost impossible to leave the house. Lee’s Educational background included the attendance of three separate colleges: Huntington College, University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, and Oxford University. Lee was unlike everyone in her college classes; she studied and wanted to excel in college when others her age were worried about the next party. She did not care about fashion or boyfriends like her peers. She focused mainly on her studies and was a part of the literary honor Society and the glee club.
