Harper Lee Biography A Descendent of Robert E. Lee, Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926 in Monroeville Alabama. Her parents were Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Cunningham Finch Lee. She was the youngest of her 3 siblings. Lee was only five years old when the first trials began in April 1931 in the small Alabama town of Scottsboro. The trials were based on the accused rapes of two white women by nine young black men. The defendants, who were nearly lynched before being brought to court, were not provided with a lawyer until the first day of the trial. Despite medical testimony that the women had not been raped, the all-white jury found the men guilty of the crime and sentenced all but the youngest, a twelve-year-old, to death. The Scottsboro case left a deep impression ...
To avoid being arrested for a Mann Act violation, both Victoria Price and Ruby Bates accused the Scottsboro Boys of raping them while aboard the train. Although both women accused the Scottsboro Boys, Ruby Bates recanted her story of the rape, and eventually, served as a witness for the defense. Victoria Price, however, refused to recant her story (“Trials of Scottsboro Boys”). Price’s testimony was inconsistent and evasive. She used ignorance and bad memory to avoid answering difficult questions.
After the black boys were taken into custody and the Alabama National Guard was called for the safety of the defendants, Stephen Roddy who did not specialize in criminal cases and Milo Moody, a 70-year-old local lawyer, were appointed as the defense attorney so as to represent the Scottsboro boys without having an opportunity to consult with the accused. Eight of the nine boys were found guilty and sentenced to death following the three-day trials, and the case was appealed to the Supreme Court of Alabama.

The nine Scottsboro boys accused of rape and their attorneys were scared to death, but the government did not seem to acknowledge their danger. The article also mentions Patterson’s previous trial where “Circuit Judge Horton, presiding, took judicial notice of incipient mob action to lynch defendants and attorneys by ordering soldiers in open court to shoot if necessary to preserve the peace” (Linder).
There are many differences between the author Harper Lee and Theodor Seuss. One of the main differences between them is their writing styles. Dr. Seuss and Harper Lee have different literature topics which sets them apart. Another element that sets them apart is how well-known Dr. Seuss is compared to Harper Lee. Also the two authors have very different word choices and styles.

To Kill A Mockingbird tells a story about two young kids named Scout and her older brother Jem Finch growing up in their small, racist town of Maycomb, Alabama. As the years go by they learn how their town and a lot of the people in it aren’t as perfect as they may have seemed before. When Jem and Scout’s father Atticus defends a black man in court, the town’s imperfections begin to show. A sour, little man named Bob Ewell even tries to kill Jem and Scout all because of the help Atticus gave to the black man named Tom Robinson. Throughout the novel, Harper Lee illustrates the central theme that it is wrong to judge someone by their appearance on the outside, or belittle someone because they are different.

After his clients were found guilty of rape and sentenced to the death penalty for a third time, Sam Leibovitz noticed a disturbing trend in the courtroom. Out of the multitude of jurors used in each hearing, none of them were black. Every single one was a white southerner, and Leibovitz felt as though the jury was rigged in favor of the prosecution. This was exceedingly common in the South at this time, as many states excluded people of color from sitting on a jury. In Norris versus Alabama, Leibovitz voiced his concerns to the United States Supreme Court. This landmark case was unorthodox, as Leibovitz had the jury rolls from the cases brought up all the way from Alabama to be read by the justices. The preponderance of the names on the lists were those of whites, but there were a few names belonging to blacks at the bottom of some of the pages. These were all hastily scrawled, as if they were added recently. Leibovitz argued that they were written there merely to show that Alabama did not intentionally influence the jury against the boys, when they actually did. The Supreme Court voted for Leibovitz, and ruled that all people, no matter their skin color, should be able to vote on a jury. We soon learn that several of the men voted guilty since the boy had a rough background not because of the facts they were presented with. Although numerous jurors did make racist or prejudice comments, juror ten and juror three seemed to be especially judgmental of certain types of people. Juror three happened to be intolerant of young men and stereotyped them due to an incident that happened to his son. In addition, the third juror began to become somewhat emotional talking about his son, showing his past experience may cloud his judgment. Juror ten who considered all people from the slums “those people” was clearly prejudiced against people from a different social background. Also, Juror ten stated in the beginning of the play “You 're not going to tell us that we 're supposed to believe that kid, knowing what he is. Listen, I 've lived among 'em all my life. You can 't believe a word they say. I mean, they 're born liars.” Juror ten did not respect people from the slums and believed them to all act the same. As a result, Juror ten believed that listening to the facts of the case were pointless. They also both happen in Alabama and both cases had a white woman/women, black man/men asscused of rapeing these white girls. Another reason that Harper Lee was influenced based on the Scottsboro story, is that when Victoria Price and Mayella Ewell told their story, it was similar because how they were scared to answer the questions. They were nervous because they knew what they were saying was a lie. In both cases, these ladies was stopping in their sentences and looking around not saying anything for short breaks and catching attitudes with the plaintiff.
