Social classes have determined how people function in a society for many centuries. These social classes provide strict standards for how one should act and live in his or her class. Social classes also play a role in one’s education. Children in higher social classes will receive a higher education than those who are in the lower social classes. This causes a large gap of education. In Charles Dickens’ novel Hard Times, the characters are not afraid to venture out of their social classes to seek the advice of others. Uneducated people always follow the advice of educated individuals. OR Members of lower social classes always follow the advice of those in higher social classes.
Stephen Blackpool decides to seek advice from Mr. Bounderby, a man with much more status than him. Stephen is a failing uneducated member of the working class working at the factory, while Mr. Bounderby is an educated member of a higher social class and the owner of the bank.
