In todays society, one cannot even walk down the street without seeing or hearing a cell phone. They are absolutely everywhere. There have been numerous allegations against your handheld buddies, but are they really that bad? The truth is, handheld technology can be harmful if not used properly, but when used appropriately, while taking the necessary precautions, handheld technology can be a good thing. On March 10, 1876 Alexander Graham Bell successfully completed his first experiment in the process of creating the telephone. That statement, or one similar to it, has been in almost every history textbook from that point on (Shulman 13). From there the telephone developed and changed with the times. First was of course the device Bell created known as the Liquid Telephone, moving on to the first commercial telephone and the various wall sets you needed an operator for. Then came the dial thingy, telephone booths, and a new way to use a desk set, and gradually from there we have come to the cell phone (Ling ix). Not only is it one of he greatest dangers, but is also the danger most talked about. Whether you 're watching a campaign against it on television, walking past the postesr in the school hallway, or even viewing the ad on your cell phone, warnings are everywhere you go. Even after all the different ads and posters, at any given moment there are more than a million U.S. drivers using their handheld phones. But is using your cell phone behind the wheel really that big of a danger (Keisbye 9)? The answer is yes. Cell phone users are four times as likely to get into an accident serious enough to injure them compared to drivers who do not use their cell phones at all, or use them in conjunction with a hands free device
