“To be, or not to be, that is the question” (3.1.57). Literature often brings tragedy, and with tragedy comes revenge. It is tragedy and revenge that kept readers entertained in “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare. Hamlet, Laertes, and Fortinbras are young men whose fathers were killed and who set out to avenge their deaths. Each young man was distinct, shared similar characteristics, and dealt with their father’s death in their own way.
Throughout the novel, Hamlet, Laertes, and Fortinbras portrayed very distinct personalities. After learning of his father’s death Hamlet states, "Haste me to know't, that I with wings as swift As meditation or the thought of love, May sweep to my revenge" (1.5.29-31). Hamlet spent more time sitting around thinking about the consequences of his actions, whereas Laertes and Fortinbras just acted. Once Hamlet realized Claudius, who had killed his father, poisoned wine that his mother drank from, he stabbed and killed him. In the end, Hamlet was killed by Laertes with a poisoned sword given to him by Claudius. Hamlet’s approach was the most reasonable given that he carefully considered each action. Fortinbras acted in the most effective way, by waging war on Poland to gain a useless piece of land. Despite the fact that Fortinbras got exactly what he wanted his revenge was more political than it was personal. Laertes on the other hand acted with emotion. Emotion rang loud and clear when he spoke, “To hell allegiance, vows to the blackest devil, Conscience and grace, to the profoundest pit. I dare damnation: to this point I stand, That both the worlds I give to negligence, Let come what comes, only I’ll be revenged Most thoroughly for my father” (4.5.129-34). Although Laertes knew he needed to kill Claudius his emotions allowed Claudius to manipulate him into killing Hamlet. His quick and personal revenge left him with regret in the end.
