In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, young Hamlet’s desire to enact revenge upon the murderer of his Father conflicts with his ability to be a good son, as his Mother married the murderer. This locks Hamlet in a state of inertia, as he is unable to choose how to act, and it shows the vacuity of revenge and the possibility of it allowing one to achieve true happiness as his actions are done contrary to their intent for the sake of pleasure, as Hamlet is only made mad by his plot and eventually dead. This representative of the Lacanian notion of the Psychoanalytical Death Drive, in which one's actions are contrary to their desires for the sake of jouissance, pleasure. The majority of this play is Hamlet deciding on whether or not he wants to actually kill Claudius. When the Ghost of his Father says he is murdered, Hamlet immediately reacts by saying he must take revenge, however, when the Ghost reveals Claudius is guilty, he then starts to back off a little and procrastinate in completing his missions, which is why spends so much time thinking and scheming. He finds different ways to distract himself from taking action. He could have taken action, the minute he found out. Instead, he decides to create a play that resembles the way Claudius murdered Old Hamlet to see if he reacts in a way that proves he is indeed guilty. Then when he does believe he is guilty and has the opportunity to kill him, he decides not to because he believes he is in prayer and thus had confessed his sins (this hints at a criticism of Catholicism that is beyond the scope of this essay). However, Claudius is unable to pray and thus can’t actually confess and be forgiven, so Hamlet could have killed him if he noticed the way Claudius attempted to pray and since he proclaims himself to be able to read people easily this should have been obvious. Hamlet then takes no more action until the end of the play when Hamlet has already been poisoned and is about to die, along with everyone else from Elsinore.
